Rajasthan Government Considers Biometric Facial Recognition System for Schools
The Rajasthan government is actively considering the introduction of a biometric-based Student Facial Recognition System (FRS) in government schools and anganwadi centres across the state. This innovative proposal aims to revolutionize attendance recording and ensure greater transparency in delivering benefits to children.
Budget Proposal and Implementation Review
The proposal forms a significant part of the Budget 2026–27 announcements. It specifically targets students enrolled in government schools as well as children aged 3–6 years attending anganwadi centres. A crucial meeting chaired by State Project Director Anupama Jorwal on March 14 thoroughly reviewed the implementation of provisions related to the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Cell under these budget announcements.
Technological Integration for Enhanced Learning
During the discussions, officials emphasized using advanced technology to improve learning outcomes. The plan includes deploying AI-driven personalized content and technology-enabled teaching methods. Furthermore, the education department intends to establish dedicated AI labs designed for adaptive learning, which will be tailored to meet the specific needs of individual students.
Automated Attendance System Rollout
The education department has set an ambitious target to roll out the new attendance system starting April 1, coinciding with the beginning of the new academic session. This system will comprehensively record the attendance of both students and teachers in schools. Officials highlighted that the biometric-based system would significantly simplify attendance tracking processes.
Instead of teachers manually marking attendance for every student, the process would become fully automated through facial recognition devices installed in government schools. Teachers' attendance would also be logged using the same integrated system, creating a unified and efficient monitoring mechanism.
Inspiration from Assam's Successful Model
Sources revealed that the idea gained substantial momentum after senior officials interacted with students from Assam who visited Rajasthan in the last week of January under an educational exchange programme. In 2022, the Assam government successfully introduced a mobile application that digitally records the attendance of students and teachers using AI-linked software.
This innovative initiative not only streamlined attendance tracking but also effectively monitored the distribution of government benefits to students. The project's success was nationally recognized when it won the prestigious Prime Minister's Award for Excellence in April last year. Rajasthan officials confirmed they are carefully studying this proven model while planning their own comprehensive technology-based monitoring system.

The proposed facial recognition system represents just one component of Rajasthan's broader vision to integrate technology into education.
