Punjab Students Union Stages Protest at Assembly Speaker's Residence Over Key Demands
In a significant demonstration of student activism, the Malwa West Zone of the Punjab Students Union (PSU) organized a protest outside the residence of Punjab Assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan in Sandhwan village, Faridkot, on Wednesday. The protest centered on three primary demands: declaring education as a state subject, implementing 90% reservation in jobs for Punjabis, and initiating a judicial inquiry into cases registered against students and youth.
Leadership Addresses Protesters with Strong Criticisms
PSU state president Ranbir Kurar, general secretary Dheeraj, and Faridkot leaders Harveer Kaur Gandhar and Sukhbir Kaur addressed the gathering, delivering a powerful message. They accused the Punjab government of "surrendering" to the central government, highlighting that Punjab is the first state to adopt the National Education Policy (NEP) introduced by the NDA government in 2020. The leaders argued that this move undermines state autonomy and called for the Punjab government to reject the NEP in the state assembly. Instead, they urged the formulation of a state-specific education policy, similar to the proposed agriculture policy, to better address local needs and priorities.
Expanded Demands for Job Reservation Beyond State Borders
Beyond education, the protesters demanded robust job reservation measures. They called for 90% of jobs in Punjab to be reserved for Punjabi residents, emphasizing economic security for the local population. Additionally, in a notable expansion of their demands, the PSU leaders advocated for job reservations for Punjab residents in other states, specifically mentioning Haryana and Karnataka. This reflects broader concerns about employment opportunities for Punjabis across India, amid rising competition and migration trends.
Confrontation with Police and Symbolic Action
The protest was not without tension, as PSU activists had a showdown with police officers while attempting to reach the Speaker's residence. Their goal was to hand over a formal demand charter to Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan. However, in his absence, the protesters took symbolic action by pasting the demand charter on the outer boundary wall of his residence. This act served as a visible reminder of their grievances and a call for immediate attention from state authorities.
Broader Implications for State-Center Relations
This protest underscores ongoing tensions between state and central governments in India, particularly regarding policy implementation and autonomy. The PSU's demands highlight a growing sentiment among student groups for greater state control over key sectors like education and employment. By targeting the Assembly Speaker's residence, the protesters aimed to pressure legislative leaders to take a stand on these issues, potentially influencing future debates in the Punjab assembly.
The event has drawn attention to the challenges faced by students and youth in Punjab, with calls for a judicial inquiry into cases against them adding a layer of urgency. As student unions continue to mobilize, this protest may set a precedent for similar actions across the state, pushing for reforms that prioritize local interests and address systemic issues in education and job markets.
