PAU NSS Units Host Awareness Session on Combating Sexual Hararassment
In a significant initiative aimed at fostering a secure and respectful academic atmosphere, the National Service Scheme (NSS) units of the College of Agriculture and the College of Basic Sciences and Humanities at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) organized a comprehensive lecture on "Combating sexual harassment and creating safe campus: Role of ICC." The event, held in Ludhiana, saw participation from more than 200 dedicated volunteers, who gained valuable insights into preventing sexual misconduct and promoting dignity on campus.
Keynote Lecture Highlights ICC's Crucial Role
Shalini Sharma, a professor and the presiding officer of the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC), delivered the keynote address. She meticulously elaborated on the concept of sexual harassment, detailing its various forms and the profound impact it has on individuals as well as educational institutions. Sharma emphasized the critical importance of addressing these issues proactively to maintain a healthy learning environment.
Furthermore, she shed light on the essential role and functioning of the ICC in handling complaints related to sexual harassment. The committee is instrumental in ensuring that grievances are addressed promptly and effectively, thereby contributing to a safer campus. Sharma encouraged students to be well-informed about their rights and responsibilities, urging them to actively participate in upholding respect and equity within the university community.
University Officials Stress Importance of Awareness Programs
Nirmal Jaura, the director of students' welfare and chief guest for the event, underscored the significance of such awareness lectures in shaping a campus environment grounded in principles of equity, respect, and safety. He commended the efforts of the NSS units and motivated volunteers to engage in social service and future awareness campaigns, highlighting their role in driving positive change.
Harmeet Singh Saralch, the NSS coordinator, also addressed the gathering, outlining the diverse activities undertaken by the NSS units.
