Navi Mumbai Parents Force School to Partially Roll Back Fee Hike After Protests
In a significant development in Navi Mumbai, parents of students at a Kharghar school have successfully pressured the institution's management to partially reduce a proposed fee increase through organized protests. The school, which educates approximately 4,600 students, had initially announced a substantial 25% hike in tuition fees, sparking immediate backlash from the parent community.
Protest Leads to Fee Reduction from 25% to 19%
The parental opposition culminated in a formal protest, which necessitated police intervention to maintain order. Following this demonstration, a crucial meeting was convened on April 15 between school authorities and parent representatives. As a direct result of the parents' steadfast demands, the school management agreed to lower the fee hike from 25% to 19%, effectively implementing a 6% reduction.
However, the parents remain dissatisfied with this revised figure. They are continuing their opposition, advocating for the fee increase to be capped at a maximum of 15%. One parent, speaking on the condition of anonymity, voiced the collective frustration, stating, "The unjustified hike was effected without due consultations with us. Our protests had led to the reduction of fees by Rs 500 or some more, but this is insufficient. The increase should not have been more than 15% in the first place."
School Management Cites Legal Compliance
In response to the ongoing dispute, the school principal has defended the institution's position. The principal asserted that the fee adjustment process followed proper regulatory procedures. "Fees have been reduced by 6% following discussions. The due procedure has been thoroughly inspected and vetted by the education officer," the principal explained. Furthermore, the management claims that the revised 19% hike falls within the permissible limits established by the Maharashtra Educational Institutions (Prohibition of Capitation Fee) Act.
