Nagpur School Association Threatens Legal Action Over Census Duty FIR Threats

The Maharashtra English School Trustees Association (MESTA) has issued a stern warning to authorities, stating it will pursue legal recourse if police cases are filed against teachers for non-compliance with Census duty assignments. This strong stance comes amid escalating tensions over the mandatory enrollment of private school staff for the national population count.

Legal Challenge Against Coercive Measures

MESTA President Sanjay Tayde-Patil declared that the association would legally challenge any coercive steps taken by officials. "So far, officials have only issued threats to file FIRs. The moment an FIR is actually filed, we will approach the court," Tayde-Patil asserted. He emphasized that the association would seek accountability from concerned officials for any punitive actions against educators.

The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has been pressuring private unaided schools to register their staff for Census duty, with indications that failure to comply could result in police cases. School managements reported being instructed to submit complete staff data for enrollment, with warnings of potential consequences for non-submission.

Academic Conflicts and Timing Issues

School principals highlighted significant timing conflicts, noting that the Census duty in April coincides with a peak academic period. Key academic activities currently underway include:

  • Conducting internal examinations
  • Evaluating board answer sheets
  • Starting new academic sessions for Classes 9 and 10
  • Managing admissions processes
  • Handling administrative responsibilities

MESTA has proposed an alternative solution, urging the state government to consider hiring unemployed graduates on a contractual basis for Census work instead of assigning teachers. "Teachers are already occupied with critical academic responsibilities. Assigning them Census work at this stage is not feasible," Tayde-Patil explained.

Financial and Personal Disruptions

The association also raised concerns about financial hardships facing teachers who have made summer travel arrangements. Many educators have booked tickets and accommodations during the short vacation window between school results and admissions, now facing substantial cancellation fees due to uncertainty over Census duty schedules.

MESTA expressed willingness to explore pooling small contributions from teachers to support an honorarium fund for alternative Census recruits. School representatives clarified they are not opposed to participating in Census work but stressed that scheduling must not interfere with core academic responsibilities.

Diverting teachers at this critical juncture would disrupt classroom continuity and negatively impact students' educational progress, school authorities warned. The association maintains that while supporting national initiatives is important, the timing and implementation must consider the practical realities of academic calendars and teacher availability.
