Shocking Act of Desperation in Medical Admission Bid
In a disturbing incident that highlights the extreme pressures surrounding medical education in India, a 24-year-old man from Jaunpur allegedly chopped off a part of his left foot in what appears to be a desperate attempt to claim disability benefits for NEET medical admission. The case has sent shockwaves through the community and raised serious questions about the lengths to which aspirants might go to secure coveted MBBS seats.
Initial Deception and Police Investigation
Suraj Bhaskar, a resident of Khalilpur in the Line Bazar area who had completed his D-Pharma and was preparing for NEET, initially approached police on January 18 with a fabricated story. He claimed that he had been attacked and that his left foot had been severed, leaving only the heel intact. Based on this complaint, police registered an FIR and launched an investigation, according to City CO Goldie Gupta.
The investigation took a dramatic turn when Suraj repeatedly changed his statements during questioning, raising serious suspicions among investigators. This inconsistency prompted police to dig deeper into his background and personal effects, leading them to discover crucial evidence that would unravel his carefully constructed deception.
Diary Revelations and Girlfriend's Testimony
Police discovered Suraj's personal diary, which contained revealing entries about his goals and aspirations. In the diary, he had written about his ambition to secure MBBS admission by 2026 and had even mentioned filling out a marriage registration form, which he kept with him. This documentation provided the first concrete evidence that his story might not be as straightforward as initially presented.
The investigation gained further momentum when police examined Suraj's call records and learned about his girlfriend. During questioning, she provided crucial information to investigators, revealing that Suraj had become increasingly desperate to secure MBBS admission by his target year of 2026. She disclosed that in October of the previous year, he had visited Banaras Hindu University (BHU) to obtain disability paperwork but had failed in this attempt.
The Alleged Self-Inflicted Injury
According to police findings, Suraj's frustration apparently reached a breaking point after his unsuccessful attempt to obtain disability documentation through legitimate channels. Investigators believe that in a state of desperation, he decided to take matters into his own hands, allegedly using a machine to cut off his own foot. This shocking act of self-mutilation represents an extreme manifestation of the pressure faced by medical aspirants in India's highly competitive education system.
Police conducted searches at Suraj's under-construction house and its surroundings but were unable to locate the severed foot. However, they did discover some injections in a nearby field, which investigators suspect may have been anaesthetics. Given Suraj's pharmaceutical background and knowledge of injection administration, police theorize that he may have first injected anaesthetics to numb the pain before proceeding with the drastic act.
Medical Treatment and Legal Consequences
The investigation revealed that after inflicting the injury, Suraj attempted to contact his family around 5 AM, but they did not answer his call. He then reached out to a relative, through whom the family eventually learned about the injury. Suraj was subsequently admitted to a private hospital in Jaunpur, where he underwent surgery for his self-inflicted wound.
City CO Goldie Gupta confirmed that once Suraj is discharged from the hospital, his formal statement will be recorded by police. Authorities have indicated that a case will be registered against him for misleading investigators, with legal action to follow based on the findings of their ongoing probe. The case serves as a stark reminder of the extreme measures some individuals might consider in their pursuit of medical education opportunities in India.
