Maharashtra Sanctions Sports Teacher Posts Statewide, But Recruitment Stalled
In a significant development for school education in Maharashtra, the state government has sanctioned one sports teacher post per cluster resource centre across all Zilla Parishad cluster resource centres. This initiative includes 136 such posts specifically allocated for Nagpur district. However, the recruitment process has not yet commenced due to pending finalisation of service entry rules, as confirmed in the Maharashtra Legislative Council on Tuesday.
Details of the Sanctioned Posts
A total of 4,860 positions for special teachers in sports have been approved statewide, with each cluster resource centre set to receive one post. This move aims to enhance physical education and sports training in schools under the Zilla Parishad system. Despite the sanction, School Education Minister Dadadji Bhuse informed the Council that recruitment cannot begin until the service entry rules and service conditions for this cadre are fully established.
The query was raised by MLC Abhijit Wanjari, who sought updates on actions taken to appoint sports teachers to Nagpur district's 136 cluster centres. Minister Bhuse acknowledged the post sanction but emphasized that the procedural framework must be in place before any appointments can be made.
Parallel Cadre for Differently Abled Students
In a related development, the state has also sanctioned a parallel cadre of special teachers for differently abled student instruction, with one post per cluster resource centre. Out of the 4,860 posts in this category, 2,984 have already been filled on a contractual basis. These appointments involve candidates holding qualifications from the Rehabilitation Council of India, implemented in compliance with a Supreme Court directive and with cabinet approval.
The remaining posts in this cadre are currently being filled, showcasing progress in this area. This contrasts with the sports teacher cadre, where no recruitment has started due to the unresolved service rules.
Uncertain Timeline for Recruitment
No specific timeline has been provided by the government regarding when the service rules for the sports teacher cadre will be finalised. Consequently, there is no clear schedule for when recruitment for the 136 posts in Nagpur district, or the broader statewide positions, will begin. This delay leaves the implementation of the sanctioned posts in limbo, affecting potential improvements in sports education across Maharashtra.
The situation highlights the challenges in translating policy approvals into actionable recruitment processes, with stakeholders awaiting further updates from the school education department.
