Maharashtra Releases Rs 51.7 Crore for Scholarships

The Maharashtra state government on Thursday approved the release of over Rs 51.7 crore to clear long-pending post-matric scholarship and free ship dues for 15,252 students from the 2018-19 academic year.

Approval by Other Backward Bahujan Welfare Department

According to a government resolution (GR), the approval granted by the Other Backward Bahujan Welfare Department pertains to the settlement of excess and pending disbursals made through the MahaDBT portal. The move aims to regularise gaps in the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) pool account.

Background of the Issue

The order noted that during the initial phase of MahaDBT implementation, the absence of a "credit to pool account" led to disbursal of funds from other schemes. This caused discrepancies in the DBT pool account, resulting in pending dues for students.

The government's decision is expected to benefit thousands of students who had been awaiting their scholarship amounts for years. The release of funds will help cover the backlog and ensure that eligible students receive their entitled financial support.

Officials stated that the regularisation of the DBT pool account will prevent similar issues in the future, ensuring timely disbursal of scholarships under the MahaDBT system. The move underscores the government's commitment to supporting education for students from backward classes.
