Madurai Schools Ramp Up Academic and Mental Health Support Ahead of Class 12 Board Exams
With only one week remaining until the Class 12 state board examinations, corporation and government schools across Madurai district are significantly enhancing their academic guidance programs while simultaneously providing robust mental health support for students. District education officials have confirmed that specialized academic focus is being prioritized, complementing the extra classes already in session.
Tailored Academic Strategies and Revision Efforts
According to officials, the approach is highly individualized. "Some students may need intensive practice with one-word answers, while others require a stronger foundational understanding of core subjects. We are conducting thorough revision examinations to systematically eliminate exam-related fears and build confidence," an official explained. This targeted strategy aims to address diverse learning needs and ensure comprehensive preparation.
Addressing Social Challenges and Student Backgrounds
Nagajothi M, headmistress of Kakkai Padiniyar Higher Secondary School, emphasized the critical importance of the Class 12 examination for students' futures. "However, students in corporation and government schools often confront significant social challenges, which can create additional obstacles in successfully clearing the exam," she noted. The school currently enrolls 134 Class 12 students, with at least 50 residing in hostels. Many come from single-parent families, some have no family and are entirely dependent on hostel care, others live with guardians, and a few are from shelter homes, highlighting the varied and often difficult circumstances faced by these learners.
Rural Students and Daily Struggles
At the Model Government Girls High School, the student body primarily hails from approximately 50 villages within the district. A teacher revealed the daily hardships these girls endure: "These students often cook for families of four to six members before attending school. If they miss a bus, they might have to forfeit the entire day's classes, underscoring the logistical and familial pressures they manage alongside their studies."
Aspirations for Perfect Results and Student Dreams
Despite these challenges, the school is aiming high. Headmistress S Sashithra stated, "Last year, our pass percentage was an impressive 99%. This year, we are determined to achieve a 100% pass rate." Students like Prathiksha Sri, whose parents work as construction laborers, embody this drive. She aspires to secure a job in the IT sector. "My parents consistently encourage me to study diligently. They believe education is the sole pathway to supporting our family and building a stable, secure future," Prathiksha shared, reflecting the hopes of many peers.
School-Specific Initiatives and Recognition
Efforts extend to smaller institutions as well. At Bharathidasanar Corporation Higher Secondary School, headmistress G. Mary Caroline is focused on ensuring all six Class 12 students pass the examination, which would help improve overall class strength. "Previously, our school and students faced a negative reputation, but this year we received an award from the collector for our anti-drug awareness campaigns, marking a positive turnaround," she said. Additionally, a senior corporation official mentioned that healthy snacks, such as sundal, are being arranged for students before evening classes to support their energy and concentration levels.
These comprehensive measures in Madurai district highlight a concerted push to blend academic rigor with emotional and logistical support, aiming to empower students from diverse backgrounds to excel in their crucial Class 12 board examinations.
