In a significant protest against poor food hygiene, numerous residents of the BR Ambedkar Hostel at Lucknow University's second campus have initiated a boycott of the hostel mess. This drastic action follows reports of insects being discovered in meals served on two consecutive days, sparking outrage among the student community.
Students Decry Unacceptable Conditions and Negligence
The boycott was organized after students found insects in their food repeatedly, highlighting severe lapses in food preparation and safety protocols. A resident, speaking on condition of anonymity, expressed the collective frustration: "This is completely unacceptable. We cannot consume food that is not prepared with basic hygiene standards. Finding insects in our meals for two days in a row demonstrates utter negligence from the catering staff. We have decided to boycott the mess until concrete actions are taken and proper hygiene is guaranteed."
History of Ignored Complaints and Failed Inspections
Residents have voiced their exasperation over previous complaints that were allegedly disregarded by university authorities. One student pointed out that even in February, the vice-chancellor conducted an inspection of the mess facilities in both the Ganga and BR Ambedkar hostels. However, no sincere corrective measures were implemented by the catering staff following this inspection, leaving the underlying issues unresolved.
This pattern of inaction has fueled the current boycott, with students demanding immediate and effective solutions to ensure food safety and quality.
University Response and Promised Actions
In response to the escalating situation, Lucknow University spokesperson Mukul Srivastava acknowledged the problem. He stated, "The issue has come to the attention of university officials, and steps will be conducted to resolve the problem." While this statement indicates awareness, students are awaiting tangible actions to address the hygiene concerns and restore trust in the mess services.
