Koraput School Tragedy: Three Staff Members Suspended Following Student Drowning Incident
In a tragic turn of events at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV) in Landiguda, Koraput district, three staff members have been suspended following the drowning deaths of three Class X students. The incident occurred at the Kolab reservoir located behind the school campus, prompting immediate disciplinary action from the Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS) authorities.
Immediate Suspensions and Ongoing Investigation
School principal Milani Mitra confirmed on Sunday that the Delhi office of NVS has placed three staff members under suspension. The suspended individuals include physics teacher Chaman Kumar, physical education teacher Rahul Singh, and hostel in-charge Ishwar Khara. Principal Mitra emphasized that a thorough investigation into the incident is currently in progress, with strict action promised against anyone found responsible for negligence or lapses in supervision.
Details of the Tragic Incident
The tragedy unfolded between 3 pm and 3:30 pm on Saturday, shortly after a group of hostel boarders had completed their final CBSE Class X board examinations. Seeking relaxation after their exams, the students reportedly went to the nearby Kolab reservoir for a bath, taking advantage of the reservoir's backwaters that lie in close proximity to the school premises.
According to Principal Mitra, parents had been repeatedly advised to collect their children by 1:30 pm on the final day of examinations. However, the seven students who eventually went to the reservoir had informed their parents they would leave the school campus the following day instead.
Sequence of Events Leading to the Tragedy
The students had celebrated Holi earlier in the day using colors brought by their parents. Later, without informing any school authorities or staff members, they proceeded to the reservoir for bathing. Tragically, as none of the students knew how to swim, they slipped into deep water and drowned despite efforts to save them.
Victims Identified
The three deceased students have been identified as:
- Lingaraj Khilo of Koraput
- Swastik Sundar Halwa of Laxmipur
- Om Prakash Halwa of Lamtaput
All three were Class X students at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Landiguda, and were reportedly close friends who had just completed their crucial board examinations.
School Safety Protocols Under Scrutiny
This incident has raised serious questions about safety protocols and supervision at residential schools, particularly those located near water bodies. The immediate suspension of three staff members indicates the administration's recognition of potential lapses in student supervision and safety measures.
The investigation by NVS authorities will likely examine multiple aspects including:
- The adequacy of safety measures around the reservoir area
- Supervision protocols for hostel students after examination periods
- Communication systems between students, parents, and school authorities
- Emergency response mechanisms at the school
As the community mourns this devastating loss, the focus remains on ensuring such tragedies do not recur and that appropriate accountability is established through the ongoing investigation.
