Historic Kolkata School Embarks on New Chapter as Co-Ed English Medium Institution
In a significant educational development in Kolkata, the venerable Tegharia Shikshayatan High School has officially commenced operations as a co-educational English-medium institution. The transformation of this government-aided school, located in a prominent VIP area, was formally inaugurated on Saturday in a ceremony graced by West Bengal's Education Minister, Bratya Basu.
Admissions Begin with Focus on Accessibility
The school is set to initiate its admission process starting Monday, with an initial target of filling 40 seats in a single section. Headmaster Barun Paul, who assumed leadership in 2018, revealed that parental interest has already been substantial. "We have been receiving numerous queries from parents eager to enroll their children here," Paul stated. "My primary objective has always been to operate this school with dignity and excellence, which motivated me to pursue this transformation through collaboration with local representatives."
The school education department has granted permission for admissions to begin from Class VI, marking a new phase for the institution.
From Pandemic Challenges to Educational Innovation
Founded in 1948, just one year after India's independence, the school was established on land generously donated by two local residents to address the educational void in the area. For 75 years, it functioned as a Bengali-medium institution, but faced severe challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic when student numbers plummeted to merely 100.
This crisis prompted Headmaster Paul to advocate for the creation of an English-medium wing, a vision that recently materialized following official approval from the school education department. Beginning with the January academic session, the school has converted its existing Bengali-medium section into a co-educational format while simultaneously launching a parallel co-educational English-medium wing.
Bridging the Affordability Gap in English Education
Paul emphasized the school's commitment to making quality English-medium education accessible to economically disadvantaged families. "As headmaster, I am determined to provide superior education at affordable rates," he explained. "While many parents aspire to enroll their children in English-medium schools, exorbitant fee structures often place this opportunity beyond reach for lower-income households. Our mission is to realize their dream of English-medium education while maintaining equal emphasis on Bengali language instruction."
The institution currently employs ten full-time teachers who will serve both mediums, with assurances from the education department that additional English-medium instructors will be appointed promptly.
Statewide Trend Toward English-Medium Expansion
This transformation aligns with a broader educational trend in West Bengal, where over 500 state board-affiliated English-medium schools now operate, with numbers increasing annually. A senior official from the school education department commented, "We possess the necessary infrastructure to establish English-medium wings and are systematically granting approvals each year before the January academic session. We are optimistic that this initiative will substantially boost enrollment in state schools within a short timeframe."
The revitalization of Tegharia Shikshayatan High School represents not merely an institutional change, but a strategic response to evolving educational demands and socioeconomic realities in contemporary Kolkata.
