Kolhapur's Gudi Padwa School Enrollment Drive Achieves Remarkable 61% Success Rate

The Kolhapur Zilla Parishad's annual 'Gudi Padwa-Shala Sankhya Vadhva' initiative, aimed at encouraging parents to secure their children's admissions to Zilla Parishad schools on the auspicious occasion of Gudi Padwa, received an overwhelming response this Thursday. This special drive, conducted every year, leverages the festive spirit to boost enrollment in public schools across the district.

Strong Enrollment Figures Highlight Community Engagement

Dr. Meena Shendkar, the District Education Officer (Primary), provided detailed insights into the initiative's impact. "Our initiative received a good response in Kolhapur Zilla Parishad schools," she stated. "Out of 23,934 children who were eligible for admission in the district, 14,627 or 61.11% of them were admitted to Zilla Parishad schools on Gudi Padwa day." This significant figure underscores the community's trust in the public education system and the effectiveness of timing the drive with cultural celebrations.

Parental Enthusiasm Evident in Long Queues and High Turnout

The enthusiasm among parents was palpable, particularly at Srimati Laxmibai Jarag Vidya Mandir in Jarag Nagar, a civic body-run school in Kolhapur city. Here, parents were seen waiting for hours in long queues to secure admissions for their children, demonstrating a strong commitment to education from the very start of the academic year. This scene was replicated across various schools, reflecting a widespread participation in the initiative.

Vibrant Cultural Celebrations Enhance Festive Atmosphere

Beyond the admissions, Gudi Padwa was celebrated with great fervor across Kolhapur. A colorful procession rally, known as 'Shobha-Yatra', was organized by the city-based dhol troop 'Karveer Garjana'. The rally commenced from the Mirajkar Tikti area and concluded at Bhawani Mandap, traversing through Mahadwar Road and the Gujari area.

The procession featured:

  • Several women dressed in traditional attire, adorned with 'Kolhapuri Pheta', participating alongside their bikes.
  • Children dressed as historical and mythological figures such as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Shri Ram, Vitthal, Khandoba, Goddess Mahalaxmi, and Baji Prabhu Deshpande, captivating onlookers.
  • Energetic performances by dhol-tasha troop members, adding to the festive enthusiasm and engaging citizens throughout the route.

Additionally, families across the city decorated Gudi sticks at their homes, further enriching the cultural tapestry of the celebrations. This blend of educational initiative and cultural festivity highlights Kolhapur's commitment to both community development and heritage preservation, making Gudi Padwa a day of dual significance for residents.
