Kerala Dental Student Suicide: SIT Intensifies Probe into Loan App Threats and Caste Harassment Allegations
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) in Kochi has significantly escalated its investigation into the tragic suicide of 23-year-old Nithin Raj, a first-year BDS student at Anjarakandy Dental College. The probe now focuses on two critical aspects: alleged threats from a loan application firm and serious accusations of caste-based emotional harassment by faculty members.
Student's Tragic Death and Immediate Aftermath
Nithin Raj, a resident of Puthukulangara in Thiruvananthapuram, was discovered critically injured near the college building after falling from a structure. Despite immediate medical attention, he succumbed to his injuries on Friday, sending shockwaves through the educational community. The incident has raised numerous questions about student welfare and institutional responsibility.
Family's Allegations and Legal Action
The student's family has made serious allegations against two faculty members, claiming Nithin faced persistent emotional harassment based on his caste and complexion. In response to these accusations, authorities have registered a case against Dr. M.K. Ram, head of the dental anatomy department, and associate professor K.T. Sangeetha Nambiar. The charges include abetment of suicide and violations under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. However, police have yet to make any arrests in connection with these allegations.
Loan App Threat Emerges as Critical Factor
College principal Dr. Vinod Mony revealed disturbing details about loan app harassment during a press briefing. According to Mony, another faculty member received threatening images of Nithin from a loan application, demanding immediate repayment. This prompted the college administration to call Nithin to the principal's office for clarification.
"The teacher received images of Nithin along with explicit threats from the loan app demanding loan repayment," stated Principal Mony, highlighting the severity of the digital harassment.
Confusion Over Contact Information
During the meeting, Nithin explained that he had only provided three reference contacts to the loan app: his parents and sister. He emphasized that he never gave the teacher's name to the application. Investigators suspect that fraudsters may have hacked Nithin's phone, accessed his contact list, and mistakenly contacted the teacher thinking she was his mother, who shares the name Latha.
"Naturally, when the teacher heard these threats, she became extremely emotional," Mony explained, describing the distressing situation that unfolded in his office.
College Administration's Response
Principal Mony, who assumed his position only on December 18, stated that he had received no prior complaints about the alleged harassment by Dr. Ram and Professor Nambiar. The meeting in question was attended by the concerned teacher, the vice-principal, and another faculty member from the anatomy department.
The college has initiated an internal inquiry through a six-member committee that continues its investigation. Both accused teachers have been formally served notices and given five days to submit their explanations regarding the allegations.
Political Response and Community Reaction
Meanwhile, the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) organized a protest march to a dental clinic in Dharmadom reportedly operated by Dr. Ram. This demonstration reflects growing community concern about the case and demands for accountability.
Ongoing Investigation and Evidence Collection
The SIT has been actively collecting evidence at Anjarakandy Dental College, examining digital records, interviewing witnesses, and reconstructing the events leading to the student's death. The investigation remains complex, with authorities examining multiple angles including:
- The nature and extent of loan app harassment
- Verification of caste-based discrimination allegations
- Institutional response mechanisms to student distress
- Digital security and privacy concerns related to loan applications
As the investigation progresses, authorities face mounting pressure to deliver justice and implement measures to prevent similar tragedies in educational institutions across Kerala.
