Kashmir Schools Shut for Two Weeks Amid Extreme Heat
The Jammu and Kashmir School Education Department has announced the closure of all schools across the Kashmir Valley for a period of two weeks, starting July 6, 2026, due to the prevailing heatwave conditions. The decision affects both government and private schools, impacting thousands of students in the region.
Closure Details and Resumption Date
According to an official order issued on July 1, schools will remain closed from July 6 to July 20, 2026. Classes are scheduled to resume on July 20. The order stated that the closure is a precautionary measure to protect students from the severe heatwave, which has seen temperatures soar above normal levels in the valley.
The directive covers all educational institutions in the Kashmir division, including primary, secondary, and higher secondary schools. The department urged parents and guardians to ensure children stay indoors and avoid exposure to extreme heat during the closure period.
Impact on Academic Calendar
This unscheduled break comes during the summer vacation period for many schools, but the heatwave has prompted an extension of the holiday. The department has not yet announced any adjustments to the academic calendar or plans to make up for the lost instructional days. However, officials indicated that a review will be conducted after the situation normalizes.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), temperatures in Srinagar and other parts of Kashmir have been consistently above 35°C (95°F), which is unusual for the region known for its moderate summer climate. The heatwave is attributed to a prolonged dry spell and lack of pre-monsoon showers.
Government Advisory and Safety Measures
The education department advised schools to remain open for administrative purposes but prohibited any academic activities involving students. Teachers and staff have been asked to work from home where possible. The government also issued a heatwave advisory, recommending that people avoid outdoor activities during peak heat hours, stay hydrated, and wear light clothing.
"The safety of students is our top priority. Given the extreme weather conditions, we have decided to close schools temporarily. We urge parents to cooperate and ensure their children follow safety guidelines," said a spokesperson for the Jammu and Kashmir School Education Department.
Context and Previous Closures
This is not the first time schools in Kashmir have been closed due to weather-related issues. In recent years, the region has experienced similar heatwaves, leading to temporary shutdowns. However, the current heatwave is considered one of the most intense in recent memory, with temperatures breaking records in several areas.
The closure also comes amid ongoing concerns about water scarcity and heat-related health issues in the valley. Hospitals have reported an increase in cases of heatstroke and dehydration, particularly among the elderly and children.
Future Outlook
Meteorologists predict that the heatwave may persist for another week, with a possibility of relief after July 10. The education department stated that it will monitor the situation closely and issue further updates if necessary. Parents and students are advised to keep track of official announcements from the department.
The decision to close schools has been met with mixed reactions. While many parents support the move for safety reasons, some have expressed concerns about the disruption to studies, especially for students preparing for competitive exams. The department has assured that alternative arrangements, such as online classes, may be considered if the closure is extended.
