Girl Rescued from Forced Marriage Excels Academically, Sets Sights on Civil Service
In an inspiring story of resilience and determination, a young girl who was dramatically rescued from an attempted child marriage in Karnataka's Hassan district has achieved academic excellence, securing a distinction in her II PUC examinations. The incident, which occurred on December 1, 2024, saw the Belur taluk administration intervene to prevent the marriage, allowing the student to continue her education and ultimately excel.
From Rescue to Academic Triumph
Mamatha MA, the student at the center of this remarkable story, scored an impressive 510 marks out of 600 in her II PUC exams. Her academic achievement comes just months after she was saved from being forced into marriage with an older maternal relative. The rescue was orchestrated by KAS officer M Mamatha, who was serving as the tahsildar of Belur at the time.
The officer recalled the urgent situation: "The marriage was fixed at a Shani Mahatma temple near Battenahalli. The girl took my number from the hostel authorities and called me up, requesting me to protect her. I rushed to the spot with the police and stopped the marriage."
According to the officer, who now serves as tahsildar of Chikkanayakanahalli in Tumakuru district, Mamatha was a resident of the D Devaraj Urs hostel when the marriage was attempted. Her parents were reportedly forcing her to marry against her will.
A Turning Point and New Aspirations
The emotional moment of rescue left a lasting impression on both the student and the officer. "When I rushed to the spot, she hugged me and cried, saying she didn't want to get married," the officer recounted. This intervention proved to be a life-changing moment for the young student.
Now, with her academic success secured, Mamatha has set her sights on an ambitious career path. "She is saying that she doesn't want to think about marriage till she lands a government job," the officer revealed. Specifically, Mamatha aims to become a bureaucrat, demonstrating how educational opportunity can transform life trajectories.
The officer's regular visits to hostels, particularly girls' hostels, during her tenure in Belur created an environment where students felt comfortable reaching out for help. "My frequent interactions with the other girls helped Mamatha reach out to me," she explained.
Another Success Story from Government Care
In a parallel story of achievement against odds, Yashaswini, an inmate at the Government Children's Home for Girls in Chamarajanagar, has also cleared her II PUC final examination with first class honors. She scored 423 out of 600 marks, showcasing her academic capabilities despite challenging circumstances.
District Child Protection Officer Manjula praised Yashaswini's multifaceted talents: "She is an all-rounder. She is the captain of the district girl's kabaddi team." Beyond her athletic achievements, Yashaswini has clear academic and professional aspirations. "Her dream is to pursue CA," Manjula noted, referring to the Chartered Accountancy qualification.
The support system at the children's home played a crucial role in her success. "Staff at the children's home supported her studies," Manjula emphasized, highlighting how institutional support can foster educational achievement.
Broader Implications and Inspirational Value
These two stories from Karnataka's education landscape demonstrate several important themes:
- The critical importance of intervention systems to protect children's rights and education
- The transformative power of education in changing life trajectories
- The role of supportive institutional environments in fostering success
- The resilience and determination of young people facing challenging circumstances
Both Mamatha and Yashaswini represent countless students across India who overcome significant obstacles to pursue their educational and professional dreams. Their achievements serve as powerful reminders of what becomes possible when young people are given the opportunity to learn and grow without premature pressures.
As Mamatha prepares for her next academic challenges with the goal of entering civil service, and Yashaswini pursues her Chartered Accountancy aspirations, their stories continue to inspire and demonstrate the vital connection between protection, education, and opportunity.
