Patna JEE Aspirant Dies by Suicide in Hostel, Leaves Emotional Note for Parents
In a deeply tragic incident, a 17-year-old engineering aspirant died by suicide by hanging himself in a hostel room in Patna on Tuesday. The event has sent shockwaves through the local community and highlighted the immense pressures faced by students preparing for competitive exams.
Details of the Incident
The deceased, identified as Saurabh Kumar, was the son of Mahesh Yadav, a resident of Beldari Bigha village in Gaya district. He was residing in Patna with his two cousins while preparing for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE), a critical test for admission to engineering colleges in India. The trio had rented two rooms in a hostel located in the Salimpur Aahar area under the Gandhi Maidan police station jurisdiction—one room designated for studying and the other for sleeping.
According to police reports, the incident came to light when Saurabh's cousins returned from their coaching classes in the evening. Upon finding him unresponsive, they peered into the room and discovered him hanging from a noose. They immediately alerted the authorities, with the police receiving the information at 8:26 PM.
Police Investigation and Suicide Note
Gandhi Maidan Station House Officer Akhilesh Mishra confirmed that Saurabh was a student at a local coaching institute and had not attended classes on Tuesday. A suicide note was recovered from his room, addressed to his parents. The handwritten message, filled with emotional anguish, read:
"Mom and dad, please forgive me. Even after studying day and night, I could not understand. I was very upset by this. You two will have no support in your old age. What could I do? I was also troubled. My last wish is that you sell your land and get my sister married into a good family. Please forgive me if possible. I have committed suicide. Yours truly, Saurabh."
This note underscores the severe academic stress and familial responsibilities that may have contributed to his decision. Police are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the suicide, focusing on potential factors such as mental health issues and the intense pressure associated with competitive exam preparation.
Broader Implications and Community Impact
The tragedy has sparked conversations about the mental well-being of students, particularly those navigating high-stakes examinations like the JEE. Educational experts and mental health advocates emphasize the need for better support systems, including counseling services and stress management programs, to prevent such incidents in the future.
Local authorities have urged parents and educational institutions to be vigilant and proactive in addressing signs of distress among young learners. The incident serves as a somber reminder of the critical importance of fostering a balanced approach to academics and emotional health.
As the investigation proceeds, the community mourns the loss of a young life cut short, with many calling for systemic changes to alleviate the burdens on aspiring students.
