Indore Implements Revised Age Criteria for RTE Admissions Under NEP 2020 Framework
The school education department in Indore has announced significant updates to the eligibility norms for admissions under the Right to Education Act for the upcoming 2026–27 academic session. These changes specifically align with the structural recommendations of the National Education Policy 2020, introducing revised age calculations for entry-level classes.
Updated Age Eligibility and Calculation Dates
According to the official notification, the revised eligibility criteria are as follows:
- Nursery: Children aged between three years and four years six months can apply. The age will be calculated as of July 31, 2026.
- KG-1: Children aged between four years and five years six months are eligible. The age calculation will also be based on July 31, 2026.
- Class 1: Children aged between six years and seven years six months can apply. For this class, the age will be determined as of September 30, 2026.
This class-wise age structure is a direct implementation of the NEP 2020 framework, ensuring a standardized approach across the district.
Online Application Process and Key Details
The online application portal for RTE admissions officially commenced operations on Friday across Indore district. The process is exclusively digital, with no offline applications being accepted for the 2026–27 session.
Key highlights of the admission process include:
- A total of 1,729 private schools in Indore district are participating in this year's RTE admission drive.
- As mandated by the RTE Act, these institutions must reserve 25 percent of seats in entry-level classes—specifically Nursery, KG-1, KG-2, and Class 1—for students from economically weaker sections and disadvantaged groups.
- The application window will remain open until March 28, providing parents ample time to complete the submission process.
- All admissions will be conducted through the state's dedicated online portal, with final student selection to be determined by a computerized lottery system administered from Bhopal.
Documentation and Compliance Requirements
Parents applying under the RTE quota are advised to ensure all necessary documents are accurately verified after submitting their applications online. The district administration has emphasized the importance of complete and correct documentation to avoid disqualification.
District Project Coordinator Sanjay Mishra confirmed that the entire admission process will be closely monitored at multiple administrative levels—district, divisional, and state—to maintain transparency and fairness. Private schools have been instructed to upload precise details regarding student strength and available seats for the specified entry-level classes on the portal.
