Goa Government Deploys Hundreds of Contract Teachers for NEP 2020 Implementation
The Goa government has taken significant steps to implement the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 by training and deploying hundreds of additional teachers on a contract basis to cover newly introduced skill-based subjects in the curriculum.
Massive Teacher Deployment for New Curriculum
According to official data released by the state education department, a total of 475 contract teachers have been specifically trained and deployed at the preprimary and primary school levels across Goa. These educators are responsible for teaching the new skill-based subjects that have been integrated into the curriculum as part of NEP 2020 implementation.
In addition to these 475 teachers, the government has appointed another 240 art teachers on a contract basis. Furthermore, 382 National Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF) teachers have been deployed specifically for secondary schools throughout the state.
Phased Implementation Leading to Full Rollout
The Goa State Educational Research and Training (SCERT) has outlined a comprehensive implementation plan for NEP 2020. Until the 2025-26 academic year, the policy was implemented at specific educational levels: nursery, Class III, Class VI, and Classes IX and X.
Starting from the new academic session, NEP 2020 is being expanded to include Classes I and II, Classes IV and V, and Classes VII and VIII. This expansion represents a significant broadening of the policy's reach within Goa's educational system.
The state government has announced that from the 2026-27 academic year, it will implement NEP 2020 recommendations across all classes in state board-affiliated schools, marking the complete rollout of the education policy throughout Goa's public education system.
New Subjects and Enhanced Curriculum
For students in Classes I and II, the curriculum has been substantially enriched beyond traditional academic subjects. These young learners will now study art and craft, sports, yoga, reading, and gardening activities as formal subjects. The SCERT will provide a common syllabus for art and craft, sports, and yoga to ensure consistency across schools.
In a structural change to the school day, Classes I and II will now feature an additional seventh period designated as the Additional Enrichment Period (AEP). During this period, activities specifically designed to foster and enhance students' skills will be conducted, providing dedicated time for skill development.
Comprehensive Assessment Framework
For other classes where NEP 2020 is being implemented, four new school assessment subjects have been introduced as part of the policy's comprehensive approach to education. These subjects include physical education, art, vocational studies, and multidisciplinary subjects.
The National Skills Qualification Framework subjects introduced for secondary school students represent a particularly forward-looking component of the implementation. These subjects are designed to teach students practical skills before they complete their schooling, giving them a competitive advantage in the employment market upon graduation.
The Goa government has assured schools that additional teachers would be provided to teach these new subjects, and the current deployment of contract teachers represents the fulfillment of that commitment. This strategic approach ensures that the implementation of NEP 2020 is supported by adequate teaching resources across all affected educational levels.
