Massive Fire Destroys 12,000 School Exam Papers in Hingoli District
A significant fire incident at a block resource centre in Hingoli district has led to the destruction of at least 12,000 question papers intended for upcoming state-level consolidated assessment tests. The blaze occurred at the Aundha Nagnath panchayat samiti facility on Wednesday, causing major disruption to educational preparations.
Short-Circuit Suspected as Cause of Devastating Blaze
Preliminary investigations indicate that a short-circuit likely sparked the fire that consumed the valuable examination materials. The incident was discovered in the morning when a staff member noticed smoke billowing from the premises and immediately alerted block education officer Mohammad Taufiq.
Local authorities from Aundha Nagnath police station, under the leadership of inspector G S Rahire, promptly visited the site to conduct a thorough panchanama and assess the extent of the damage. The destroyed question papers were specifically meant for consolidated assessment tests targeting students from Standards III to VI.
Critical Examination Schedule at Risk
The assessment tests, organized by the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), were scheduled to take place on April 11, 15, and 22. These examinations cover essential subjects including mathematics and English, forming a crucial part of the academic evaluation process for thousands of students across the region.
Officials revealed that the question papers had already been distributed through a multi-tier system over the previous three days. The materials were initially dispatched from state authorities to district centers, then forwarded to taluka offices, and finally to individual examination centers.
Partial Distribution Saved Some Materials
According to education officials, question papers had successfully reached seven of the thirteen examination centers in Aundha Nagnath taluka before the fire incident. However, the remaining papers destined for six centers were still stored at the block resource centre when the blaze erupted, resulting in their complete destruction.
"The fire destroyed at least 12,000 question papers meant for the consolidated assessment tests for Stds III to VI," confirmed an official familiar with the situation. The loss represents a significant portion of the examination materials prepared for the scheduled tests.
Emergency Measures Implemented to Save Academic Calendar
District education officer Asavari Kale has taken immediate action to address the crisis, submitting a formal requisition for replacement question papers to SCERT authorities. "Efforts are underway to ensure students do not face any academic setback and that the examinations are held as per schedule," she emphasized.
Education department officials are working diligently to coordinate with SCERT to expedite the printing and distribution of replacement papers. The priority remains maintaining the integrity of the examination schedule while ensuring that students' academic progress remains uninterrupted despite this unexpected setback.
The incident has highlighted the vulnerability of critical educational materials during distribution phases and prompted discussions about implementing additional safety measures for storing examination papers in the future.
