Delhi Budget 2024: Education Focus with School Upgrades

Delhi Government's Upcoming Budget to Focus Heavily on Education Sector

The Delhi government is poised to make education a cornerstone of its upcoming budget, with officials signaling that significant initiatives to bolster the public school system and modernize infrastructure will be unveiled this month. The budget, anticipated to be presented in the Delhi Assembly during the final week of March, is expected to detail measures aimed at broadening access to high-quality education and revitalizing classrooms throughout the capital.

Expansion of CM Shri Schools and Infrastructure Upgrades

According to sources, the budget is likely to announce an increase in the number of CM Shri Schools, alongside the construction of smart classrooms and substantial enhancements to existing facilities. "The initiative aims to transform government schools into model institutions equipped with modern amenities," an official stated. Currently, Delhi boasts approximately 75 CM Shri Schools, which offer technologically advanced, skill-based learning in accordance with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. These schools feature:

  • Smart classrooms with interactive tools
  • Digital libraries for enhanced resource access
  • ICT and computer labs to foster digital literacy
  • Career counselling support to improve student outcomes

The goal is to elevate government schools to the standards of private institutions, ensuring equitable educational opportunities.

Technology Integration and AI-Enabled Classrooms

Technology is set to play a pivotal role in the education push, with plans to convert thousands of classrooms into AI-enabled smart rooms. This initiative will include interactive boards, robotics labs, and digital learning tools to create a more engaging and effective learning environment. In the initial phase, over 7,000 classrooms are slated for upgrades, with a long-term vision to modernize thousands more across the city.

Officials emphasized that these reforms are designed to make the government school system "future-ready" by combining infrastructure improvements with technology-driven and skills-focused education. "The emphasis may be on digital education, career guidance, and skill development to prepare students for higher studies, employment, and entrepreneurship," another official added.

Building on Previous Investments

Last year, the Delhi government presented a budget of Rs 1 lakh crore, allocating Rs 1,000 crore specifically for education. The upcoming budget is expected to build on these investments, further strengthening the city's education framework. By focusing on digital transformation and infrastructure enhancements, the government aims to create a robust system that supports student success and aligns with national educational goals.
