Delhi Development Authority Unveils 'Rangbaag' Theatre Initiative for Youth
In a significant move to democratize theatre education, the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has launched 'Rangbaag', an innovative and immersive programme in collaboration with the National School of Drama (NSD). This initiative, inaugurated on Wednesday at Baansera, aims to bring theatrical learning into public spaces, making it more accessible to children across the city.
Workshop Details and Application Process
The theatre workshop is scheduled to run from May 2 to June 14, with daily sessions held between 3 pm and 7 pm. It is a paid programme, with applications now open for the first batch, which will accommodate 30 children aged 12 to 16 years. Registrations are being accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, subject to eligibility verification. Interested parties can access the forms online, though DDA and NSD reserve the right to reject any application at their discretion.
According to a DDA official, the sessions will engage young participants through a variety of theatre-based activities. "The exercise aims to sensitise them to their surroundings while honing their skills under expert guidance," the official stated. Activities will include communication exercises, movement-based tasks, storytelling, and improvisation, providing a comprehensive introduction to the performing arts.
Logistics and Safety Guidelines
Participants will receive ID cards on the first day, which must be presented for free entry to Baansera Park on subsequent days. However, regular attendance is mandatory; repeated absences without prior notice may result in the seat being offered to another child. The official also highlighted safety precautions, noting that the workshop takes place in an open park environment and may involve light physical activities. "While all reasonable measures will be taken to ensure a safe environment, DDA and NSD shall not be responsible for heat-related health issues," the official advised, urging children and parents to prepare for the summer conditions.
Background and Future Prospects
The 'Rangbaag' initiative traces its origins to October 2025, when NSD presented 'Nanha Scientist', a programme celebrating youthful curiosity. This was followed by a memorandum of understanding signed between DDA and NSD in February this year, paving the way for implementation during the Green Expo 2026 at Baansera. The workshop will culminate in a final performance on June 14, where participants will showcase their learnings, potentially inspiring future pursuits in theatre.
This partnership underscores a broader effort to integrate arts education into community settings, fostering creativity and engagement among Delhi's younger residents.
