Chennai Libraries Emerge as Prime Study Hubs for Exam-Bound Students

In Chennai, a growing trend is seeing students flock to public libraries to prepare for their exams, driven by the need for quiet, well-lit, and ventilated spaces. This movement is particularly pronounced among those from congested residential areas, where home environments are often unsuitable for focused study.

School Initiatives Drive Library Usage

Officials from the directorate of public libraries report that government school heads from neighborhoods like Ashok Nagar, Perambur, and R K Nagar are actively collaborating with local librarians. They are informing library staff that students will arrive in groups of 10-15 on weekends, utilizing the premises for several hours at a time.

Teachers highlight the benefits of libraries over schools during study holidays. While schools offer some relief, their scope is limited compared to libraries, which provide a wealth of reference materials and guides. M Janaki, a teacher at Govt Girls Higher Secondary School in Ashok Nagar, noted, "We reached out to the recently renovated Ashok Nagar public library. Students are eager to study there, as it offers a peaceful environment that is hard to find at home."

Modern Amenities Enhance the Study Experience

Beyond traditional books, these libraries are equipped with modern facilities that cater to today's educational needs:

  • Availability of computers and WiFi, allowing students to use laptops and mobile phones for research.
  • Access to clean drinking water and toilets, amenities that are sometimes lacking even in schools.
  • Air-conditioned rooms in sections like the children's park at Anna Centenary Library, providing comfortable seating arrangements.

A student shared, "Even our schools do not offer all these facilities. Having a quiet place with resources like guides and internet access makes a huge difference in our preparation."

Dual Benefits for Competitive Exam Aspirants

Kamatchi, the chief librarian at Anna Centenary Library, emphasized the dual advantages for students preparing for competitive exams such as NEET and JEE. "Students coming to study are directed to specialized sections where they can refer to guides and materials tailored for these exams. This targeted support helps them focus better and improve their chances of success."

Administrative Support and Future Plans

The library department is committed to facilitating this trend. District library officer M Kavitha stated, "If students are willing to come in large numbers, school heads can reach out to us beforehand, and we will make necessary arrangements. We are willing to offer additional administrative support to ensure students have a conducive study environment."

This initiative not only addresses the immediate needs of students but also promotes the use of public resources for educational advancement. As exam seasons approach, Chennai's libraries are poised to become even more integral to the academic journey of many young learners.
