CBSE Introduces Special Assessment Scheme for Class 12 Students in West Asia

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced a significant decision regarding the declaration of Class 12 results for students studying in West Asian countries. This move comes in response to the current volatile situation in the region, which has raised serious safety concerns.

Exams Cancelled Across Seven Countries

CBSE has officially cancelled the Class 12 board examinations that were scheduled to take place from March 16, 2026, to April 10, 2026. This cancellation applies specifically to CBSE-affiliated schools located in Bahrain, Iran, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. Additionally, exams that were previously postponed in March 2026 have also been called off. The board emphasized that this decision was made primarily to ensure the safety and security of students during these uncertain times.

Why an Alternative Assessment Scheme is Necessary

The board explained that while some examinations were successfully conducted before the regional situation deteriorated, many others could not be held as planned. To address this imbalance and guarantee fair outcomes for all students, CBSE has developed an alternative assessment method instead of relying on incomplete examination data. This approach is designed to protect students' academic interests and prevent any disadvantage resulting from the current circumstances.

Scope of the Assessment Scheme

The alternative assessment covers a comprehensive range of subjects, including:

  • 17 academic subjects
  • 10 skill subjects
  • Total of 27 subjects

CBSE has identified several categories of students based on their examination participation:

  1. Students who appeared in all subjects
  2. Students who appeared in 4, 3, 2, or 1 subject
  3. Students whose all exams are pending
  4. Students with compartment or additional subjects

How Marks Will Be Calculated

Class 12 assessments consist of two components: theory examinations and practical or internal assessments. The marks distribution follows these ratios:

  • 80:20
  • 70:30
  • 60:40
  • 50:50

Practical or Internal Assessment marks will be based on the scores already awarded by schools. For theory marks, different calculation methods will be applied depending on each student's specific situation.

Key Features of the Assessment Scheme

Students who appeared in all subjects will be evaluated based on their performance in the exams that were successfully conducted. Students who appeared in fewer subjects will have their results prepared using school-based assessments and internal marks. Schools will utilize various evaluation tools, including periodic tests, half-yearly exams, and pre-board exams, with the best performance among available records being considered.

For students who only managed to take one exam, their result will be determined solely by that examination. If no exam was conducted, these students will be given an opportunity to appear in a supplementary exam scheduled for July 2026.

Students who relocated from affected countries to other nations, including India, will have their results calculated based on their performance at their new examination centres.

Mark Upload Process and Timeline

CBSE will provide an online platform specifically for schools to upload student marks. The upload window is set from April 6, 2026, to April 13, 2026. Schools have been instructed to ensure accurate mark submission within this timeframe, with no changes permitted after submission.

Verification and Record Keeping

Schools must maintain all relevant records securely, as CBSE reserves the right to verify these documents at a later date. Any instances of unfair practices could result in disciplinary action against the school involved.

Result Declaration and Subsequent Steps

Results will be announced following standard CBSE procedures. Students who do not meet the passing criteria will be placed in the compartment category, with compartment exams to be conducted later if necessary. Additional important points include:
