CBSE Developing Assessment Framework for Class XII Students Impacted by West Asia Exam Cancellations

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is actively working on a structured assessment plan for Class XII students whose examinations were cancelled at centers in West Asia. The board has confirmed that results for both Class X and Class XII will be declared on schedule despite these disruptions.

Complex Process for Class XII Assessment

Sanyam Bhardwaj, CBSE Controller of Examinations, explained that finalizing the assessment framework requires careful analysis. "Once a decision is finalised, the assessment will be released. The process requires careful analysis of data, including an assessment of the situation and identification of possible solutions, before any plan can be concluded," Bhardwaj stated.

He emphasized that while the assessment framework for Class X could be prepared relatively quickly, the same exercise for Class XII presents greater complexity. "Class X was comparatively straightforward. However, Class XII involves a wider range of subjects. We need to evaluate how many students are affected, their locations, the number of examinations they have appeared for, and the specific issues involved. Only after a thorough review of all these factors can a decision be taken," he added.

Detailed Assessment Scheme Already in Place for Class X

For Class X students, CBSE has already outlined a comprehensive assessment plan through an official circular. The board announced that examinations scheduled between February 17 and February 28, 2026, were conducted successfully at most centers. However, exams were cancelled at specific centers located in:

  • Doha (Qatar)
  • Iran
  • Kuwait
  • Oman
  • Qatar
  • Saudi Arabia
  • United Arab Emirates

These cancellations occurred due to prevailing circumstances in the region. According to the circular, a total of six academic examinations were completed during the examination window, including:

  1. Mathematics
  2. Science
  3. English
  4. 16 language papers
  5. 22 skill-based subjects

How Class X Results Will Be Calculated

CBSE has introduced a detailed assessment scheme based on the number of examinations each student was able to complete:

For students who appeared in all examinations: Their results will be declared based on their performance in the completed examinations.

For students who appeared in four examinations: Results will be calculated based on the average of marks obtained in the best three performing subjects for subjects whose examinations were not conducted.

For students who appeared in three examinations: Results will be derived based on the average of marks obtained in the best two performing subjects for subjects whose examinations were not conducted.

For students who appeared in only two examinations: Their results will be prepared based on the average of marks from two subjects in the remaining subjects.

The board has also acknowledged the presence of private candidates registered under the compartment category, though no separate detailed assessment formula for them has been elaborated in the provided document.

The CBSE continues to monitor the situation closely and remains committed to ensuring fair assessment for all affected students while maintaining academic integrity and timely result declarations.
