CBSE Announces Comprehensive Curriculum Reforms for 2026-27 Academic Session
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has unveiled a significant and comprehensive overhaul of its curriculum, set to be implemented in phases starting from the 2026–27 academic session. These transformative reforms are meticulously aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) and the National Curriculum Framework (NCF), aiming to strengthen multilingual learning, enhance conceptual clarity, and equip students with future-ready skills.
Phased Implementation of Three-Language Formula
In a major shift, CBSE will introduce a structured three-language framework across educational stages, designated as R1, R2, and R3. As per the new NCF recommendations, two of these three languages must be native to India. The board will make the third language (R3) mandatory for students starting from Class 6 in the 2026-27 academic session.
A senior CBSE official elaborated: "This phased implementation ensures that every learner studies at least two Indian languages, continuing our commitment to multilingual education. R3 level textbooks will be introduced in Class 6 this year, with the first board exams under this full scheme occurring in 2031."
The official added that while the same language scheme is generally required, exceptions may be granted under approved norms for students returning from foreign schools where the third language studied is unavailable domestically. However, such students must still complete the total number of subjects as stipulated.
It is important to note that the third language will not be made mandatory for Class 9 students at this stage, with the full implementation unfolding gradually.
Dual-Level System for Mathematics and Science
Mathematics and science education will undergo a major structural transformation with the introduction of a two-level system beginning in the 2026–27 academic session for Class 9 students.
Under this new system:
- All students will study a standard curriculum and appear for a common 80-mark examination lasting three hours.
- Students seeking higher proficiency can optionally choose an 'advanced' level in either or both subjects.
- This advanced component will consist of a separate 25-mark, one-hour paper designed to rigorously test higher-order thinking skills and deeper conceptual understanding.
The official clarified: "While the standard exam is mandatory, the advanced paper remains optional. Crucially, performance in the advanced paper will not be added to the overall aggregate score. Instead, students scoring 50 percent or above will have this advanced-level qualification reflected separately on their mark sheet, recognizing their specialized proficiency."
The first board exams for Class 10 students under this new dual-level structure will be conducted in 2028.
Introduction of New Compulsory Subjects
The curriculum overhaul also introduces computational thinking and artificial intelligence as compulsory subjects for classes 9 and 10. These subjects are being introduced as modules with internal assessments in the current academic session and will become compulsory board exam subjects for Class 10 starting in 2029. Notably, these subjects are already being introduced in classes 3 to 8 in the current academic session, building foundational skills early.
Mandatory Art, Vocational, and Physical Education
With the new curriculum, CBSE is making art education, vocational education, and physical education mandatory for classes 9 and 10. Textbooks are set to be introduced for art education and physical education to standardize learning.
The official detailed the assessment plan: "In the current academic session, Class 10 students will undergo school-based assessments for art and physical education. Then, in the 2027-28 academic session, vocational education will become a compulsory subject with an annual or board exam, while art and physical education will continue to be assessed through school-based internal examinations."
These sweeping reforms represent CBSE's strategic effort to create a more holistic, flexible, and skill-oriented educational framework, preparing students not only for academic success but also for the dynamic demands of the future global landscape.
