Coastal Karnataka Students Embrace CBSE's First Class 10 Second Board Exam

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has introduced its first-ever second board examination opportunity for Class 10 students, scheduled for May, and the response from coastal Karnataka has been remarkably strong. Students who were dissatisfied with their scores in science and mathematics following the recent results announcement are leading this enthusiastic participation.

Significant Registration Numbers Across Schools

School managements across the region report that approximately 35% of students who appeared for the initial board examination have chosen to register for this second attempt. This substantial percentage reflects students' determination to enhance their academic marks and fortify their future educational prospects.

At Little Rock Indian School in Brahmavar, Udupi, an impressive 100 out of 303 students who took the boards have already enrolled for the second examination. Similarly, Shree Gujarati English Medium School has seen 13 of its 28 examinees register for another attempt. Lourdes Central School reports that around 60 of its 200 students are actively preparing to appear again.

Mathematics and Science Dominate Subject Choices

Educational authorities have observed that mathematics has emerged as the most preferred subject for the second examination, closely followed by science. Many students expressed that the mathematics paper was both challenging and lengthy, while science also proved more difficult than anticipated.

Mathew C Ninan, director of Little Rock Indian School, commented on this trend, stating that the registrations clearly demonstrate students' desire to improve their academic performance. "Already 100 students who appeared for the exam have registered for the second exam. They want improvement in their results," he emphasized.

Independent Preparation and Crash Courses

Fr Johnson L Sequeira, principal of Lourdes Central School, noted that students are utilizing the gap period before the May examination to prepare independently. "Out of 200 who appeared, nearly 60 students have planned for the second exam. They are preparing themselves," he explained.

Ashwini A Shenoy, head of Shree Gujarati English Medium School, added that some students have enrolled in crash courses to intensify their preparation efforts. "Out of 28 students, 13 have planned to appear for the second exam," she confirmed.

Student Perspectives and Practical Considerations

Students themselves view this second examination as a valuable opportunity to recover from unexpectedly low scores. One Class 10 student shared, "I expected good marks in these subjects as I studied well, and they are my favourite subjects. However, the results have left me unhappy as I performed well in all other subjects except these."

School authorities highlighted an important practical consideration: while students can request re-evaluation of their answer scripts, the results of that process are typically declared only after the second examination is completed. Consequently, many families perceive the second exam as a more practical and timely option.

Advantages Over Re-evaluation

Teachers have pointed out that re-evaluation usually results in only marginal changes to marks—often just one or two points. In contrast, the second examination provides students with a genuine opportunity to significantly improve their scores. Furthermore, students retain the flexibility to choose the better outcome between their two attempts, making the May examination an attractive proposition for numerous candidates.

This innovative approach by CBSE is empowering students to take control of their academic destinies, offering a second chance to demonstrate their knowledge and capabilities in crucial subjects that form the foundation of their future educational pathways.
