Bhopal Slum Girl Chandni Vishwakarma Tops MP Board Class 12 with 98.8%
In an inspiring story of resilience and determination, 18-year-old Chandni Vishwakarma from the Bhim Nagar slum in Bhopal has achieved a remarkable feat by emerging as the Madhya Pradesh Board class 12 topper. She secured an astounding 98.8% with 494 out of 500 marks in the commerce stream, outshining over 7 lakh students across the state.
Defying Poverty to Achieve Academic Excellence
The Madhya Pradesh Board of Secondary Education announced the results on Wednesday, sparking widespread celebration. Chandni's exceptional score not only placed her at the pinnacle of academic performance but also surpassed the achievements of many students from affluent urban coaching centers. Her success serves as a powerful testament to how sheer perseverance can overcome significant socio-economic barriers.
Life in Bhim Nagar has been a constant struggle for Chandni's family. Her father, Rambhuvan, works as a daily-wage carpenter, laboring from dawn to dusk with calloused hands to provide meager sustenance for his wife, younger son, and Chandni. Despite these harsh conditions, Chandni remained undeterred in her pursuit of education.
Overcoming Adversity with Unwavering Resolve
Chandni shared her journey with TOI outside the Gurudevgupta Shiksha Kendra, a free school for slum children operated by the Jagran Social Welfare Society, which she attended. "Many nights, I would sit on the roadside pavement, battling mosquitoes and flickering bulbs, just to revise accounts and economics," she recounted. "The motto of my school—'no fees, only opportunity'—kept me motivated. Every evening, my father's weary eyes silently urged me to succeed, knowing that our future depended on it."
Scarcity was a constant companion in her life, yet Chandni transformed these obstacles into fuel for her ambition. She dedicated up to 8-9 hours daily to her studies, her quiet determination becoming a form of rebellion against the constraints of her circumstances.
Recognition and Future Aspirations
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav extended a warm welcome to Chandni at his residence, praising her as "a beacon for underprivileged youth" and pledging state support for her continued education. "She has made all of us proud," he stated, personally congratulating the teenager whose triumph highlights the deep-seated inequities within the education system.
Looking ahead, Chandni has set her sights on the Chartered Accountant (CA) exams, driven by a dream of achieving financial independence to lift her family out of poverty. Her story resonates as a powerful reminder of the transformative potential of education and human spirit.
