Bengaluru Schools Heighten Vigilance After Stranger Approaches Students

In response to a series of concerning incidents, several schools in Bengaluru have issued formal advisories to parents and students, emphasizing the need for heightened caution around strangers. This move comes after reports of unknown individuals approaching children near school premises, prompting immediate action from educational institutions and local authorities.

Incident at Bishop Cotton Boys' School Triggers Alert

Bishop Cotton Boys' School in Bengaluru has taken proactive steps by issuing a circular to parents following a reported incident. According to the school, a parent informed them that a stranger had approached a student near the school van and offered chocolates. The child wisely refused the offer, and the individual departed when the van driver noticed the interaction.

In light of this event, the school has urged parents to remain extremely vigilant and ensure close supervision of their children during arrival and dispersal times. The circular explicitly advises students not to interact with strangers under any circumstances, reinforcing basic safety protocols.

To bolster security, the school has instructed its security personnel to increase vigilance and closely monitor student movements both within and immediately outside the campus. Additional precautionary measures are being implemented to enhance overall safety, and parents have been encouraged to promptly report any suspicious activities to the school office.

Police Response and Ongoing Investigations

Despite the school's actions, a senior police officer involved in the case noted that concrete information about the incident has been elusive. "We have been interacting with parents, students, teaching staff, and others for several days, but no one claims to have directly witnessed the event," the officer stated. "Everyone reports hearing about it from others. Nevertheless, we are not taking any chances."

In response, police authorities have increased patrolling near the institution and are actively engaging with students and parents. They are providing guidance on how to respond if strangers approach, emphasizing the importance of immediate reporting and avoidance.

National Public School Issues Similar Advisory

Meanwhile, National Public School in Banashankari has also issued an advisory to its parent community. Principal Jayanti Nair explained that the school acted after a parent reported an incident near an apartment complex, where an unknown individual in a van allegedly approached children and offered chocolates. The person left when others noticed him.

The school's advisory strongly advises students not to accept anything from strangers and to immediately inform adults—such as school staff, parents, or security guards—if they encounter similar situations. "It is crucial that we take every possible precaution to ensure our children's safety," Nair emphasized.

Community-Wide Safety Measures and Expert Advice

The safety concerns have extended beyond schools, with apartment complexes in Bengaluru sending out messages to residents, urging parents to remain vigilant during student drop-off and pick-up hours. This community-wide effort aims to create a safer environment for children.

Counsellor Purva Ranade highlighted the importance of educating children about stranger danger. "It is essential to teach children what a stranger means and make them aware of common tactics, such as offering chocolates or fabricating stories like 'your parents sent me to pick you up,'" she said. Ranade also recommended that van drivers escort younger children to their vehicles if parked outside the campus, adding an extra layer of protection.

As Bengaluru schools and authorities continue to monitor the situation, these collective efforts underscore a commitment to child safety. Parents, educators, and law enforcement are working together to implement robust measures that prevent potential threats and ensure a secure learning environment for all students.
