In a decisive move prompted by harsh winter conditions, the district administration in Bareilly has ordered the closure of all schools up to Class 8 until December 20. The directive, aimed at ensuring student safety, comes as a severe cold wave and persistent dense fog continue to disrupt normal life across the region.
Official Directive and Scope of Closure
The order, issued on the directions of District Magistrate Avinash Singh, is binding for all educational institutions. Dr. Vinita, the Basic Education Officer, confirmed that the shutdown applies uniformly to government, aided, and private schools teaching students from Classes 1 to 8. She explicitly warned that strict action would be taken against any school found violating this mandate.
However, the administration has provided a crucial exemption. Examinations that were scheduled prior to the announcement of this closure will be conducted as per their original timetable. Dr. Vinita clarified that these pre-decided exam programs will not be affected by the three-day temporary shutdown.
Weather Conditions Wreak Havoc
The decision follows a significant deterioration in weather over the past two days. Bareilly and its adjoining areas have been engulfed in thick fog that persists throughout the day, with no sunshine reported. Icy cold winds have intensified the chill, making conditions particularly severe during the early morning and evening hours.
Meteorological data underscores the severity. Tuesday was recorded as the coldest day in the district in the last decade, with the maximum temperature plunging to a mere 16.3 degrees Celsius. Officials noted that the combination of dense fog and cold winds has drastically reduced visibility, adversely affecting daily routines and the movement of transport.
Orange Alert and Public Advisory
The local administration is preparing for prolonged adverse conditions. Additional District Magistrate Santosh Kumar Singh stated that the India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for dense fog for the next three days. He attributed the intensified cold to winds blowing in from the hills, which are expected to sustain the cold wave.
With no immediate relief in sight, authorities have advised residents to exercise caution. The public has been urged to avoid unnecessary travel and to take special care of children and the elderly. Commuters faced significant challenges on Wednesday morning, with extremely low visibility forcing vehicles to move slowly on major roads, leading to traffic disruptions and an increased risk of accidents across the district.
