Three Special Needs Students from Andhra Pradesh Embark on Historic Everest Base Camp Trek
In a groundbreaking initiative, three students with special needs from north Andhra Pradesh have been selected for a pioneering expedition to the Everest Base Camp. This historic trek is organized by the Andhra Pradesh Department of School Education and Samagra Shiksha, and is claimed to be the first of its kind in the country.
Meet the Selected Students
The 21-member group of students with special needs from across the state includes three standout participants from north Andhra Pradesh. They are:
- Ch Pavan Kumar from Kundram ZP High School in Anakapalli mandal, Anakapalli district.
- L Hari Sri Durga Prasad from Jogampeta ZP High School in Golugonda mandal, Anakapalli district.
- V Jnana Sai from Chapara ZP High School in Moliaputti mandal, Srikakulam district.
All participants are studying in government educational institutions, ranging from Class IX to Intermediate levels, showcasing the inclusive nature of this program.
Expedition Details and Journey
The 16-day expedition commenced on Wednesday and is scheduled to conclude on April 30. The students will trek to the Everest Base Camp, which is situated at a challenging altitude of 5,364 metres. This journey not only tests physical endurance but also symbolizes a significant step towards inclusivity and empowerment for students with special needs.
To prepare for this arduous trek, the selected students underwent a rigorous selection process. They first cleared district-level screenings, followed by state-level evaluations. As part of the final selection phase, they received specialised training in Ladakh, equipping them with the necessary skills and resilience for high-altitude trekking.
Route and Logistics
The team's journey began with travel from Vijayawada to Delhi, and then onward to Kathmandu. From Kathmandu, the Everest Base Camp trek officially starts, taking the students through some of the most breathtaking yet demanding terrains in the world.
This expedition highlights the Andhra Pradesh government's commitment to providing unique and empowering opportunities for all students, regardless of their abilities. It serves as an inspiration for inclusive education and adventure-based learning initiatives across India.
