The Badagarakeri Government Higher Primary School in Ponnampet taluk is under severe threat as a portion of its building has collapsed, putting the entire structure and its students in danger.
Historic Institution Crumbling
Established in the year 1900, the Badagarakeri Govt School was gearing up for a proud celebration of its quasquicentennial, or 125th anniversary, this year. However, these festive preparations have been abruptly overshadowed by a pressing crisis. A significant crack developed in a section of the school building, leading to its eventual collapse. This structural failure now poses a grave danger to the integrity of the entire school building, turning the anniversary year into one of urgent concern.
Immediate Impact on Students and Management
The immediate fallout has severely disrupted education. School authorities were forced to shift a section of students out of the damaged classroom. This has exacerbated an existing crisis, as the management now grapples with a shortage of classrooms due to the deteriorating infrastructure. Currently, a total of 73 students from classes 1 to 7 are enrolled at the Badagarakeri Higher Primary School, and their safe learning environment is compromised.
The school's 125th-anniversary function was strategically planned for January 26, India's Republic Day. Alumni and the school management, who were deeply involved in anniversary celebrations, have now had to pivot their focus entirely. Their efforts are now channeled into devising immediate plans for the building's renovation and safety.
Appeals for Urgent Action
Recognizing the severity of the situation, the School Development and Management Committee (SDMC) has swung into action. They have submitted formal requests to both the education department and the local gram panchayat, urging the authorities to initiate immediate relief and repair work on the precarious school building.
In response to these appeals, the field education officer along with concerned engineers have visited the school site for a detailed inspection. The school community and students are now anxiously awaiting the next steps and a concrete plan from the authorities to save this historic educational institution from complete ruin. The race is on to secure the building before the planned anniversary and, more importantly, to ensure the continued safety of its students.
