Ranchi University Inaugurates State's First University Health and Wellness Centre
Ranchi University (RU) has taken a significant step towards promoting mental and physical well-being on campus with the inauguration of its new health and wellness centre. Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar officially opened the facility on Wednesday, marking it as the first such centre among state universities in the region.
Comprehensive Support for Stress Management and Health
The centre is designed to assist both employees and students in managing their health and controlling stress through a variety of activities. According to RU officials, individuals can engage in hobbies such as performing arts, literary activities, and yoga to foster relaxation and personal growth. This holistic approach aims to address the increasing pressures faced in academic and professional environments.
Governor Gangwar emphasized the importance of mental health, stating, "Every person suffers from stress at some point in life. Hence, this centre would play a vital role. Stay away from excessive use of mobile phones. Also, notice how many times you smile in a day." His remarks highlighted the need for mindfulness and digital detox in today's fast-paced world.
Professional Counseling Services Available
In addition to recreational activities, the centre will provide both online and offline counseling services. These will be offered in collaboration with the Central Institute of Psychiatry (CIP) and the Ranchi Institute of Neuro Psychiatry and Applied Science (Rinpas), ensuring access to expert mental health support for the university community.
Additional Chief Secretary to the Governor, Nitin Madan Kulkarni, underscored the urgency of such initiatives, noting, "Tension and anxiety are widespread. A total of 1,71,000 people die by suicide in the country each year. Hence, the centre is a positive step." This statistic reinforces the critical need for proactive mental health measures in educational institutions.
Future Plans for Enhanced Medical Facilities
Principal Secretary (Higher Education) Rahul Purwar announced plans to expand the centre's offerings. "We would make efforts to provide online medical facilities through the centre," he said, indicating a commitment to integrating technology for broader healthcare access. This move could potentially include telemedicine services, further supporting the well-being of students and staff.
The inauguration of this centre reflects a growing recognition of the importance of mental health in higher education. By combining traditional methods like yoga with modern counseling and potential online medical services, Ranchi University sets a precedent for other institutions to follow in fostering a healthier academic environment.
