Chandigarh University Hosts Vibrant Voters' Awareness Padyatra on National Voters' Day
In a significant initiative to foster democratic engagement among the youth, Panjab University (PU) in Chandigarh organized a state-level voters' awareness padyatra to commemorate National Voters' Day. The event, held on the university campus, saw enthusiastic participation from young voters, highlighting the crucial role of the younger generation in India's electoral process.
Collaborative Effort for Youth Empowerment
The programme was meticulously organized by the National Service Scheme (NSS), PU, in collaboration with MY Bharat, an initiative under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. This partnership underscores the government's commitment to involving youth in nation-building activities and promoting civic responsibility from an early age.
Active Participation and Symbolic Ceremonies
A total of 356 young voters, including a substantial number of first-time voters, actively participated in the event. The day commenced with participants taking the Voters' Pledge, a solemn commitment to exercise their democratic rights responsibly. They also joined Shapath Chakras, symbolic circles reinforcing their dedication to the electoral process.
First-time voters were honored with special badges, marking their inaugural entry into the democratic framework. A poignant symbolic passing of the baton ceremony was conducted, emphasizing the pivotal role of youth in sustaining and strengthening India's democracy for future generations.
Dynamic Padyatra and Campus Activities
The centerpiece of the programme was a 2.5-kilometer padyatra (walkathon), which traversed key areas of the university campus. This walk served as a powerful medium to spread awareness about the importance of voting and democratic participation.
For those not participating in the walk, a variety of engaging activities were organized on campus. These included rangoli-making sessions, where participants created colorful designs themed around democracy, as well as rhythmic yoga and Zumba sessions to promote physical fitness and holistic well-being among the attendees.
Leadership and Guidance
The programme was led by PU Vice-Chancellor Prof Renu Vig, who was accompanied by Registrar YP Verma, along with numerous faculty members and university officers. Their presence underscored the institution's dedication to nurturing informed and responsible citizens.
In a related development, Prof Renu Vig addressed students and the university community on the eve of Republic Day through a recorded message broadcast on Radio Jyotirgamaya 91.2 MHz. In her address, she described students as key stakeholders in carrying forward the university's legacy and shaping the vision of Viksit Bharat @2047.
Prof Vig urged students to focus on academics, skill development, and overall personality growth, while also emphasizing the importance of physical and mental well-being. She called upon faculty and staff to remain responsive to student concerns and contribute constructively to nation-building efforts.
This comprehensive event not only celebrated National Voters' Day but also reinforced the university's commitment to holistic education and civic engagement, preparing the youth to be active participants in India's democratic journey.
