Pearson's AI Learning Revolution Engineered in India

Pearson's Global Learning Transformation is Powered by Indian Engineering

Pearson, a venerable institution with a 182-year history, is undergoing a profound reinvention as an AI-driven learning company. This strategic shift is deeply anchored in the work of its engineering teams based in India, where the company has expanded its role significantly over the past three decades. From classrooms in the United States and the United Kingdom to test centers and workplaces across more than 160 countries, Pearson's assessments, credentials, and learning platforms form a critical part of the global education infrastructure.

From Holding Company to AI Learning Pioneer

Dave Treat, Pearson's chief technology officer and chief information officer, highlighted the company's dramatic evolution. "We're a 182-year-old company," Treat stated during a recent visit to Pearson's India centers. "We've been many things over the years, and we're reinventing ourselves again now as an AI-based learning company." This transformation marks a stark departure from Pearson's past as a sprawling holding company, which once included assets like the Financial Times, The Economist, Madame Tussauds, a château in France, and even Baywatch. By divesting these holdings, Pearson has focused exclusively on education, transitioning from a textbook publisher to a technology-led entity centered on skills and outcomes.

India as the Epicenter of Pearson's Tech Innovation

Between two-thirds and three-quarters of Treat's technology and IT organization is headquartered in India, making it a core hub for innovation. "There is a part of every one of my teams that is epicentered here," Treat emphasized. The India centers are integral to Pearson's global engineering fabric, with teams responsible for:

  • Platform engineering and site reliability
  • Data engineering and governance
  • Cybersecurity and enterprise architecture
  • AI enablement and digital workplace services

These teams build and operate the shared platforms that power Pearson's products worldwide, serving learners at every life stage—from schools and universities to workplaces.

AI-Enhanced Learning and Measurable Outcomes

In an era where AI is reshaping how people learn and skills are assessed, Treat argues that learning itself has become the key skill for economic and professional success. "The pace of technology and the need to learn," he said, "is the single differentiating aspect of the success of a company, a community, a country." Pearson's engineers in India are directly addressing this challenge by developing AI-enabled tools that boost academic performance. According to Treat, 85% of students using these tools achieve their desired grades or better, with an overall grade uplift of 7.5%. These systems are designed to support, not replace, teachers by providing insights into student struggles and enabling more targeted instruction.

Embedding Learning into the Workplace

Pearson's enterprise learning business, now its fastest-growing segment, leverages the same platform-led approach. Here, AI is seamlessly integrated into the workflow, allowing employees to build skills without interrupting their daily tasks. Treat cited an example of an AI agent developed with Microsoft that operates within Teams meetings, offering personalized feedback after calls. "Telling people to stop their day job and go sit in a learning management system, that doesn't work," he explained. "We have to embed learning into the context of work."

Overcoming Challenges in AI Product Development

Scaling such innovative products presents challenges, including compute costs, privacy concerns, enterprise customization, and building trust. Treat describes this phase as the "hardening" of AI product development, where precise execution is crucial despite strong demand. Pearson's engineering teams in India are deeply involved in navigating these complexities, ensuring that AI solutions are robust, secure, and effective for global deployment.

Through its strategic focus on AI and the pivotal role of its Indian engineering hubs, Pearson is not only adapting to a disrupted world but is actively shaping the future of education and skills development on a global scale.
