Patna University (PU) is set to introduce a comprehensive postgraduate program in forensic science starting from the academic session 2026-27. The university has completed all necessary preparations for the launch of this course, which aims to address the growing need for skilled forensic experts in Bihar.
Course Approval and Infrastructure
Vice-Chancellor Ajay Kumar Singh stated that the decision followed a proposal from the state home department. The university has already developed the curriculum and detailed syllabus for the postgraduate teaching program, which received approval from its academic council. The classes will be held on the first floor of the newly constructed Central Research Facility Centre located at the Patna Science College campus.
Regulatory Clearance
The draft admission ordinance and examination regulations for the four-semester program have been submitted to the Bihar State Higher Education Council and Lok Bhawan for approval. Additionally, the proposal has been forwarded to the state government for the necessary clearance. Teaching will commence only after receiving approval from the competent authorities.
Intake and Facilities
The course will initially accommodate 30 students. Laboratory facilities will be developed at the site to support practical training. The university plans to expand the program in the future based on demand and resources.
Growing Demand for Forensic Experts
The demand for trained manpower in forensic science has been rising due to increasingly sophisticated crimes, but Bihar currently lacks adequate experts in this field. At present, no institution in the state offers forensic science as a subject. This new program aims to fill this critical gap.
Scope of Forensic Science
Dr. Akhilesh Gupta, a physics department teacher at PU, explained that forensic science applies scientific methods to investigate and discover evidence in crimes. It utilizes tools and techniques from natural sciences within the criminal justice system for recognition, identification, individualization, and evaluation of physical evidence. The field encompasses various disciplines including biology, chemistry, physics, psychology, and social sciences.
Applications in Criminal Investigations
Forensic science is used in cases of rape, accidents, missing persons, kidnapping, murder, fraud, suicide, and forgery. It helps determine the time and location of a crime, as well as the means used. Specialists inspect crime scenes to gather fingerprints and other evidence, while cybercrime investigations also rely heavily on forensic techniques.
