In a significant move to address basic sanitation needs, the Odisha government has directed that every college in the state must have at least one fully functional toilet for female students. This decision comes from the state's Higher Education Department following numerous complaints about non-operational and unusable washrooms on various campuses.
Addressing a Critical Infrastructure Gap
The initiative aims to guarantee fundamental sanitation facilities for women pursuing higher education across Odisha. Tired of persistent complaints, the department has formally requested the Works Department to undertake the construction of these essential facilities. The scope of this project is substantial, covering a total of 760 colleges statewide. This includes 660 aided colleges, 66 government colleges, and 34 autonomous colleges.
Standardized Design for Uniform Implementation
To ensure the project is executed effectively, uniformly, and in a timely manner, the Higher Education Department has proposed a key strategy. The plan involves adopting a standardized design and a uniform cost estimate for constructing these toilets. This approach will be applied across all categories of colleges, preventing delays and ensuring consistency in the quality of facilities built.
