Odisha Higher Education Department Approves 36 New Assistant Professor Positions
In a significant move to strengthen faculty resources and elevate the quality of higher education across the state, the Odisha higher education department has sanctioned the creation of 36 new assistant professor posts in government degree colleges. This strategic decision specifically targets institutions situated in rural and underserved regions, where academic delivery has been hampered by persistent faculty shortages.
Addressing Long-Standing Vacancies and Improving Ratios
Official sources confirm that this initiative is designed to tackle long-standing vacancies and ensure more favorable teacher-student ratios, particularly in colleges located outside urban centers. For years, students and educationists have repeatedly raised concerns about vacant teaching positions, which have resulted in irregular class schedules and limited subject options in numerous colleges, adversely affecting the overall learning environment.
The new posts will be governed by the Odisha Education Service College Branch Recruitment Rules, 2020, ensuring a structured and transparent appointment process. The disciplines earmarked for these new positions include chemistry, philosophy, physics, and zoology, based on comprehensive need assessments conducted by the department to identify areas with the most critical shortages.
Focus on Rural and Model Degree Colleges
The allocation of these posts will prioritize colleges in remote and underserved areas, including the new model degree colleges in Malkangiri, Rayagada, Deogarh, Nabarangpur, Sonepur, and Nuapada. This focus aligns with the state's broader goal of enhancing educational accessibility and quality in regions that have historically faced challenges in attracting qualified faculty.
Officials have indicated that steps are being taken to expedite the recruitment process, aiming to make appointments at the earliest possible opportunity to minimize further disruptions in academic services.
Broader Recruitment Efforts in Higher Education
This development follows recent statements by Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj, who highlighted that filling vacant faculty positions is a priority after the completion of vice-chancellor appointments. In a related move, the department has also notified the recruitment of 225 librarians in non-government aided colleges under its purview, with these positions to be filled through the State Selection Board.
These concerted efforts underscore the state government's commitment to revitalizing higher education infrastructure, ensuring that students across Odisha, especially in rural locales, have access to qualified educators and robust academic support systems.
