Nagpur University Nuclear Energy Course After Shanti Bill

Nagpur University Introduces Nuclear Energy Certificate Course Post-Shanti Bill Approval

In a significant educational development, Nagpur University has launched a new certificate course on Radiation Safety and Nuclear Energy for science students. This initiative follows the recent approval of the Shanti Bill by the Central government, which facilitates private sector involvement in the nuclear energy domain.

Course Details and Industry Alignment

The course, designed by the Postgraduate Department of Physics, is open to both BSc and MSc students. University officials emphasize that this move is strategically timed to align with emerging industry demands. With the Shanti Bill paving the way for expanded private participation, the nuclear energy sector is projected to experience substantial job growth over the next five years, creating numerous employment opportunities for graduates.

The certificate programme was conducted under the joint aegis of the department and the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC). Dr S Murali, a former scientist from the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, served as the chief mentor, providing expert guidance throughout the course.

Curriculum and Key Topics Covered

The curriculum was meticulously developed after extensive consultations with subject matter experts. Key topics covered in the detailed sessions include:

  • Sources of radiation and detection techniques
  • Measurement instruments and safety principles
  • Biological effects of radiation exposure
  • Radioactive waste management strategies

The course balanced theoretical understanding with practical applications, equipping students with essential awareness and skills for the safe utilization of radiation technologies in various professional settings.

Inaugural Batch and Participation

For the inaugural batch, a total of 72 BSc and MSc students registered for the course. Out of these, 51 students who met the attendance requirements successfully completed the programme and were awarded certificates by the university. Notably, the course also attracted participation from professors of deemed universities, who aimed to gain insights to replicate similar educational offerings in their own institutions.

Future Plans and Administrative Details

Officials confirmed that the curriculum was widely communicated to science faculty students and affiliated colleges prior to its launch. The seven-day course is now scheduled to be conducted every semester to accommodate ongoing student interest and industry needs.

While participation in the course remains free of cost, the university will charge a nominal fee for examination and certification purposes. This structured approach ensures accessibility while maintaining academic standards and resource sustainability.

This educational initiative by Nagpur University represents a proactive step in bridging the gap between academic training and the evolving demands of the nuclear energy sector, empowered by the recent legislative changes introduced through the Shanti Bill.
