Mysuru Minister Advocates for Women's Science Education as Key to National Development
Mysuru district in-charge minister HC Mahadevappa on Wednesday made a compelling appeal for women to prioritize science education, describing it as a critical component for building a robust nation, driving innovation, and achieving true gender equality.
Minister's Address at College Valedictory Event
The minister delivered this message while inaugurating the valedictory ceremony of cultural events organized by Maharani's Commerce and Management College for Women in Mysuru. In his speech, Mahadevappa connected contemporary educational goals with historical foundations, emphasizing the enduring importance of learning for societal advancement.
Historical Context and Constitutional Vision
Reflecting on the legacy of the Maharajas of Mysuru, Mahadevappa noted that they laid the groundwork for modern Karnataka by championing holistic development, which notably included promoting education for women and other vulnerable segments of society. He highlighted how this historical commitment aligns with the vision enshrined in the Constitution of India.
"The Preamble of our Constitution envisions an egalitarian society where every citizen enjoys equal rights and opportunities," Mahadevappa stated. He further pointed out that BR Ambedkar, a key architect of the Constitution, worked tirelessly not only for the welfare of scheduled castes and scheduled tribes but also for the empowerment of women, underscoring the inclusive nature of India's foundational principles.
Praise for Academic Excellence and Current Initiatives
The minister also commended women students for their outstanding academic achievements and for securing top ranks in various fields, showcasing their potential when given equal educational opportunities. Presiding over the event, Chamaraja MLA KK Harishgowda elaborated on the historical contributions to women's education in the region.
Harishgowda highlighted the role of Mysuru Maharaja Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar in advancing women's education by establishing exclusive women's colleges in the erstwhile Mysuru state. He connected this legacy to current efforts, mentioning that the Congress party now provides free education to women and hostel facilities for over 2,900 rural students, thereby continuing the tradition of supporting female learners.
Emphasis on Holistic Development and Extracurricular Activities
Adding to the discourse on comprehensive education, Dr. Sadananda, head of the Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research Centre's Mysuru unit, urged students to focus on sports and extracurricular activities. He emphasized that such engagements are vital for all-round development and encouraged participation in NCC, NSS, and other nation-building activities to foster well-rounded individuals.

The event was attended by several notable figures, including:
- Joint director of the department of collegiate education, DS Prathiba
