Madurai witnessed a significant educational development as Minister for Commercial Taxes and Registration P Moorthy inaugurated a newly established science park at the Anna Park Complex in Thirunagar on Tuesday. The inauguration ceremony was presided over by Commissioner Chitra Vijayan, marking a milestone for the city's infrastructure aimed at fostering scientific curiosity among students and the public.
Government Commitment to Welfare and Development
During the event, Minister Moorthy emphasized the Tamil Nadu government's dedication to implementing various schemes for the welfare of its people. He highlighted focused efforts in key sectors such as healthcare, education, agriculture, and industrial development, positioning Tamil Nadu as a leading state in India. The minister specifically noted that numerous initiatives are being rolled out to enhance students' skills in both education and sports, underscoring a holistic approach to youth development.
Park Features and Educational Value
The science park, set up at an estimated cost of ₹2.7 crore under the O&M deficit grant fund phase 04 for the year 2024-2025, boasts a range of facilities designed to make learning interactive and engaging. It includes science equipment, paved walkways, comfortable seating arrangements, electric lights for evening visits, surveillance cameras for security, a protective roof, ticket counters, and an entrance gate.
The science equipment is primarily based on applications of physics theories, covering concepts from simple ones like gravity and force to more complex principles such as thermodynamics and Hooke's Law. Descriptive signboards placed next to each exhibit explain the underlying theory and provide instructions on how to use the equipment, making it accessible to visitors of all ages.
Unique ISRO Space Shuttle Models
A standout feature of this park is that it is the only science park in Tamil Nadu to showcase two models of ISRO space shuttles. This addition highlights India's commitment to space exploration and serves as an inspiration for young minds interested in aerospace and technology. Maintenance and Visitor Experience
Ankidyne, a renowned science exhibit manufacturer, was responsible for the renovation of the park and the installation of all equipment. According to Sokkalingam, a supervisor at the park, the company will maintain the facility for one year. During this period, a team of guides will be available to provide detailed explanations on how to use the displayed equipment, ensuring a rich educational experience for visitors.
Many children who visited the park expressed their enjoyment and appreciation for the interactive exhibits. "It helps us to understand the concepts we learned in school," said Krishnan, one of the young visitors. Other children added that the equipment was unlike anything found in traditional parks, making their visit more interesting and memorable.
Expert Endorsement and Future Recommendations
M Pandiarajan, secretary of the Tamil Nadu Science Forum, praised the park as a brilliant initiative. He advocated for the establishment of more such parks across the state to educate students effectively. Pandiarajan also urged the district administration to ensure proper maintenance of the facility to sustain its educational value over time.
Reflecting on Madurai's educational landscape, Pandiarajan noted, "Madurai does not have a planetarium yet. The addition of the ISRO models at the science park is a good step towards creating an interest in the wonders of space, and the construction of a planetarium will be a major benefit to Madurai in terms of both education and revenue." This statement underscores the potential for further development in science education infrastructure in the region.
