LU to Introduce Gender Studies Courses from 2026-27

Lucknow University's Institute of Women and Gender Studies is set to introduce women and gender studies courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels starting from the academic session 2026-27. This initiative marks a significant step towards promoting interdisciplinary education in gender theory, policy, and social research.

Undergraduate Program Details

The BA programme in women and gender studies will be a four-year course with an intake capacity of 80 seats. It will follow the entry and exit framework as outlined under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, allowing students flexibility in their academic journey. The curriculum is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of gender issues, combining theoretical knowledge with practical applications.

Postgraduate Program Details

The MA programme will be of one-year duration and will offer 30 seats. It is open to graduates from all disciplines, encouraging an interdisciplinary approach. Students will delve into advanced topics in gender theory, policy analysis, and social research methodologies. This program aims to equip graduates with the skills necessary for careers in various sectors.

Career Opportunities

According to Manini Srivastava, Coordinator of the Institute of Women and Gender Studies, graduates can explore career options in NGOs, research organisations, international agencies, social policy units, media, and academia. The courses were recently approved by the Academic Council, paving the way for their implementation.

This development is expected to fill a crucial gap in higher education by offering specialized training in gender studies. It aligns with global trends in academia and responds to the growing demand for experts in gender equality and social justice.
