Lucknow University Adopts Turnitin Software to Combat Plagiarism Across All Levels
LU Replaces DrillBit with Turnitin for Plagiarism Detection

Lucknow University Implements Advanced Plagiarism Detection System

In a significant move to uphold academic integrity, Lucknow University (LU) has officially transitioned from the DrillBit software to the globally recognized Turnitin platform for plagiarism checking. This comprehensive initiative now encompasses research papers and theses submitted by PhD scholars, as well as undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) students, marking a substantial expansion from previous practices.

Aligning with UGC Guidelines for Enhanced Research Quality

The implementation of Turnitin is being carried out in strict adherence to the guidelines established by the University Grants Commission (UGC), aimed at elevating the standard of research work across the institution. This shift comes in response to recent findings highlighted by media reports, which revealed that DrillBit had identified plagiarism in a staggering 95% of PhD theses submitted during the current academic year. Analysis indicated that in the majority of these cases, students had relied heavily on data and text generated by artificial intelligence (AI)-based applications.

Proactive Detection and Broader Student Inclusion

Under the previous system utilizing DrillBit, plagiarism checks were conducted only after the submission of theses, often leading to last-minute issues. With the adoption of Turnitin, the university has introduced a more proactive approach. All research papers and theses will now undergo preliminary screening for originality before they are formally admitted for evaluation. Furthermore, while earlier protocols primarily focused on PhD candidates, the new system extends its reach to include UG and PG students, emphasizing the importance of academic honesty at all educational levels and discouraging excessive dependence on AI tools.

Empowering Faculty with Advanced Tools

To ensure effective oversight, professors and teachers at Lucknow University have been granted direct access to the Turnitin platform. They will now be responsible for reviewing submissions to verify originality and maintain proper academic standards. According to LU spokesperson Mukul Srivastava, Turnitin offers a robust suite of features designed to detect plagiarism with high efficiency.

Key capabilities of the software include:

  • Comparison of submitted content against an extensive international database comprising research papers, journals, books, web pages, and previously submitted student work.
  • Generation of detailed similarity reports that highlight matched text and identify potential sources of copied material.
  • Advanced detection of paraphrased content and patterns indicative of AI-generated text.
  • Tools for checking proper citations and providing feedback to improve writing originality.

This technological upgrade is expected to foster a culture of authenticity and rigorous scholarship, aligning with global best practices in academic research and education.
