In a significant disruption to daily life, more than 500 students residing in the hostels of Medinirai Medical College and Hospital (MMCH) in Daltonganj are facing the abrupt removal of tea and eggs from their mess menus. This drastic measure has been implemented by mess managers as a direct response to the escalating costs of commercial LPG cylinders, which have surged due to the ongoing conflict in West Asia. The financial strain has compelled the hostel authorities to eliminate these staple items to allocate funds for essential cooking gas supplies.
Mess Manager Details Cost-Cutting Measures Amid LPG Shortage
Sanjay Kumar, the mess manager for the boys' hostel, provided a candid explanation for the changes. "Our mess has stopped serving tea for approximately the past three weeks because of the severe LPG cylinder crisis. Additionally, we have removed eggs from the menu entirely. These cuts are necessary to save money that must now be redirected toward managing the procurement of LPG cylinders," Kumar stated. He further revealed that the mess has also reduced the provision of bananas as part of broader austerity efforts to afford the inflated cylinder prices.
Monthly LPG Requirements and Price Hikes Exacerbate Situation
The scale of the issue is underscored by the substantial LPG needs of the college hostels. MMCH requires around 60 commercial cylinders each month to prepare meals for students in both the boys' and girls' hostels. Currently, the cost of these cylinders has skyrocketed, with prices now up to Rs 500 higher than pre-crisis levels. This sharp increase has placed immense financial pressure on the mess operations, forcing difficult decisions regarding menu offerings.
College Principal Urges Continuity and Cooperation
In response to the growing concerns, Jakka Srinivas Rao, the principal of Medinirai Medical College, addressed the situation. "We have issued clear instructions to the in-charge of the two hostel messes to ensure that there is no discontinuation of any essential meals. It is imperative that basic meal services are maintained without interruption," Rao emphasized. He acknowledged the genuine challenges faced by the mess staff during this crisis and called for understanding and cooperation from all hostel residents to navigate these trying times together.
