Loreto College Kolkata Expands Curriculum with Commerce and Tech Programs
Kolkata's historic Loreto College, a premier institution for women's education, has announced ambitious plans to diversify its academic offerings. During the college's 114th Foundation Day celebration, themed 'Rooted in Tradition: Reaching for Excellence', teacher-in-charge Sister Nirmala revealed that the institute intends to introduce commerce into its curriculum, alongside a range of new programs.
New Academic Programs in the Pipeline
Currently, Loreto College provides courses exclusively in arts and science. However, the administration is set to broaden its scope with several new initiatives. Sister Nirmala confirmed that the college has applied for autonomous status from the University Grants Commission (UGC), a strategic move aimed at modernizing the curriculum and evaluation systems. Once approved, this autonomy will enable the launch of multiple new courses starting from the next academic year.
The proposed additions include:
- Commerce programs to complement the existing arts and science streams.
- A Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree to cater to growing demand in business education.
- Advanced studies such as an MA in Political Science.
- Technology-focused courses including Data Science and Computer Science.
- A specialized course in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), enhancing skills in spatial data analysis.
Autonomous Status as a Catalyst for Change
Sister Nirmala emphasized that all these plans are contingent upon receiving autonomous status from the UGC. The college submitted its application at the end of January, and approval is eagerly awaited. "All these are in the pipeline as we are waiting for the college autonomy permission from the UGC. We applied for it at the end of Jan. Once we receive the autonomous status for the college, we will start working on the plans," she stated.
This move towards autonomy is not just about expanding course offerings; it represents a broader vision to adapt to contemporary educational needs while maintaining the institution's rich heritage. Founded on February 2, 1912, Loreto College has long been a cornerstone of women's education in Kolkata, and this expansion aims to further its legacy of excellence.
Foundation Day Celebrations and Future Convocation
The announcement was made during the college's 114th Foundation Day celebration, which highlighted its enduring commitment to tradition and progress. Sister Nirmala also noted that once autonomous status is granted, the college plans to hold its convocation on February 2, aligning with its founding date to honor its history.
This strategic expansion is expected to attract a wider student base and provide enhanced educational opportunities, reinforcing Loreto College's position as a leading institute in Kolkata's academic landscape.
