JU Renews Push for Institute of Eminence Tag

Kolkata: Keen to secure the prestigious 'Institute of Eminence' (IoE) tag, Jadavpur University (JU) authorities have decided to write to both the state government and the Union Ministry of Education. The move comes as the university seeks to revive its bid for the coveted status, which it had lost earlier due to a funding dispute between the state and central governments.

University's Strategy

JU Vice-Chancellor Chiranjib Bhattacharjee stated, "We plan to write to the Union education ministry through the state to get the IoE tag, as the same party is in power at both the Centre and the state now." This strategic approach aims to leverage the political alignment to resolve the earlier impasse. The university hopes that the unified governance will facilitate smoother negotiations and approval.

Background of the IoE Tag

JU was among eight institutes shortlisted in July 2018 for the IoE tag, which would have brought in Rs 1,000 crore in funding over five years. However, the process stalled due to disagreements between the state and central governments over funding mechanisms. "JU lost the tag due to the state-Centre fund war," explained JUTA general secretary Partha Pratim Ray. The new initiative seeks to overcome this hurdle.

Future Prospects

With the renewed effort, JU aims to enhance its research capabilities, infrastructure, and global standing. The IoE tag is expected to provide significant financial support and autonomy, enabling the university to compete with top institutions worldwide. The university community remains optimistic that the current political alignment will lead to a favorable outcome.
