Indian Knowledge System Centre Inaugurated at St Agnes College in Mangaluru
A significant step towards preserving and promoting India's intellectual heritage was taken with the inauguration of the Indian Knowledge System (IKS) Centre at St Agnes College in Mangaluru on Friday. The event marked a pivotal moment in academic efforts to bridge traditional wisdom with contemporary scholarship.
Call for Broader Historical Understanding
During the launch ceremony, Vivek Alva, the managing trustee of Alva's Education Foundation, delivered a compelling address urging for a more expansive and inclusive interpretation of India's history. Alva emphasized that viewing history through a narrow religious lens severely limits the appreciation of the profound depth and rich diversity inherent in the Indian Knowledge System.
He pointed out that public discourse often fixates on well-known historical figures such as Tipu Sultan and Chhatrapati Shivaji, while the substantial contributions from the Northeast region of India are frequently marginalized or entirely overlooked. This selective focus, according to Alva, results in a fragmented understanding of the nation's past.
Addressing Regional Neglect in Education
Alva highlighted a critical issue in the current educational framework, noting that textbooks contain only limited references to the Northeast. This scarcity reflects an inadequate comprehension of the region's historical and cultural significance within the broader Indian context. He stressed that the Northeast has made significant and valuable contributions to India's history, and it rightfully deserves enhanced representation in academic curricula and national narratives.
Furthermore, Alva elaborated on the IKS as a venerable 4,000-year-old tradition that has been shaped by numerous regions and diverse communities across the subcontinent. He specifically mentioned Tulunadu's cultural diversity, explaining that its identity transcends mere linguistic boundaries, with the Tulu language boasting a long and distinct historical lineage.
Historical Contributions and Cultural Integration
In his speech, Alva also cited the influential role of the Basel Mission in the region, referencing their notable contributions such as the development of Mangalore tiles, the introduction of police khaki uniforms, and advancements in printing press technology. He commended the Mission's dedication to engaging deeply with local language and culture, exemplified by their work on compiling a comprehensive dictionary.

Sr Venessa, the principal of St Agnes College, outlined the ambitious vision for the newly inaugurated IKS Centre. She described it as a dedicated hub aimed at rediscovering, preserving, and actively promoting India's vast intellectual traditions. The centre is designed to foster meaningful dialogue between traditional wisdom and modern academic scholarship, creating a synergistic environment for learning and innovation.
