IIT Ropar Celebrates 18 Years with Major Academic and Technological Advancements
In a significant event held in Patiala, the Indian Institute of Technology, Ropar (IIT Ropar) commemorated its 18th Foundation Day on Tuesday. The celebration was centered around the theme 'Accelerating R&D, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship in the Country', highlighting the institute's commitment to national progress through cutting-edge initiatives.
Leadership Emphasizes Role in Building a Self-Reliant India
The chief guest, Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria, delivered an inspiring address, stating, "Institutions like IIT Ropar are the engines of a self-reliant India. The quality of research, the spirit of entrepreneurship, and the dedication of the faculty and students here are a testament to what Indian higher education can achieve." His words underscored the pivotal role technical institutes play in driving innovation and economic growth.
IIT Ropar Director Prof Rajeev Ahuja, in his welcome speech, reflected on the institute's journey from its inception in 2008 on the banks of the Satluj River to becoming a research-intensive university of national importance. He remarked, "From a young institution, IIT Ropar has grown into a hub of high-impact research, patent filings, and startup creation that addresses real-world challenges. Our goal is to rank among India's top institutions in research, innovation, and entrepreneurship, ensuring our work benefits society, industry, and the nation."
Key Launches and Initiatives Unveiled
The Foundation Day featured several flagship announcements aimed at enhancing academic and technological capabilities:
- Indus HPC: A high-performance computing facility designed to accelerate computational research in fields such as engineering, life sciences, climate modelling, and artificial intelligence. This positions IIT Ropar among a select group of Indian technical institutes with dedicated HPC infrastructure.
- Shaurya Sthal: A commemorative space inaugurated to honour the Nation's armed forces and celebrate the patriotic ethos, reflecting the institute's location in Punjab.
- Nalanda Chatbot: An AI-powered chatbot developed in-house to serve as an interface for academic and administrative queries, alongside a Publications Dashboard and Digital Archive to provide stakeholders with easy access to research outputs.
Boosting Entrepreneurship and Research Funding
In a move to foster innovation, IIT Ropar launched its Student Entrepreneurship Support Programme, disbursing seed grants of Rs 1,00,000 each to six student-led startup teams. These ventures span various sectors, showcasing the institute's focus on practical problem-solving.
Additionally, the institute announced formal investment commitments from partners towards its Research and Development and Innovation Fund (RDIF), indicating growing private sector confidence in its research capabilities and commercialisation potential.
Recognition and Reflections on Growth
The event included a faculty and staff awards ceremony to acknowledge contributions across the institute. Prof M K Surappa, founding director (former) of IIT Ropar and former vice-chancellor of Anna University, delivered an address reflecting on the institute's journey and expressing optimism about its future trajectory towards research leadership.
Pushpendra P Singh, dean of Corporate Alumni Placement and Strategy (CAPS) and project director of ANNAM AI, delivered the vote of thanks, wrapping up the celebrations.
