IIT Kharagpur Secures Election Duty Exemption for Hostel Staff to Maintain Student Services
In a significant administrative move, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur has successfully intervened to ensure the continuity of essential student services during the election period. The institute's authorities wrote to the district magistrate, requesting the exemption of hostel employees from election duties, citing the critical nature of their roles in maintaining mess services and hostel operations.
Emergency Services Designation Leads to Staff Relief
The request was based on the classification of hostel maintenance and food services as "emergency duties" that require uninterrupted staffing. Out of a total of 211 Group C and D staff members at IIT Kharagpur, 171 had initially received letters mandating their participation in election training, posing a potential threat to daily campus operations.
"We have written to the district magistrate to exempt hall employees, engaged in emergency services, from election duties," stated IIT Kharagpur director Suman Chakraborty. The institute emphasized that these employees support nearly 17,000 students residing in various halls of residence, and their absence would severely impact food services, potentially disrupting academic activities.
Administrative Negotiations Yield Positive Results
Following the formal letter and a subsequent meeting with administrative officials, approximately 65 of the IIT Group C and D staffers were reportedly relieved of their election duties. This decision came after IIT officials, including representatives who met on Wednesday with additional district magistrate Sukanta Saha and other officials, detailed the operational challenges that would arise if hostel management staff were assigned to election tasks.
"The IIT authorities explained the problems that would arise if their hostel management staff members were assigned election duties. It has been reported from the district administration that around 65 of the 171 staffers have been relieved of election duty," confirmed an official involved in the discussions.
Broader Context of Election Staffing Challenges
Despite this exemption, the election staffing landscape remains demanding. Some IIT staffers did attend election training at South Side Boys' School on Wednesday, and around 500 IIT employees from other departments have been assigned election duties. West Midnapore District Magistrate Bijin Krishna highlighted the ongoing shortage, noting that approximately 3,000 polling personnel are still needed to meet election requirements.
The Group C and D staff members at IIT Kharagpur work in rotating shifts daily, including on national and weekly holidays, underscoring their essential role in campus life. This exemption ensures that student welfare and academic continuity are prioritized during the critical election period.
