IIT Dhanbad Launches Next Phase of Tribal IT Skills Programme

In a significant move to reduce the digital divide, the Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines) Dhanbad has initiated the next stage of its capacity-building programme aimed at enhancing basic and advanced IT skills for tribal students in Jharkhand. The programme, which includes end-semester examinations and intensive hands-on training, is currently underway from April 8 to 10.

Government-Backed Initiative for Inclusive Education

This initiative receives robust support from the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Government of India, and is being executed by the Department of Management Studies and Industrial Engineering under the Centre for Excellence. The programme targets students from Classes X, XI, and XII enrolled in Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS), a flagship scheme designed to provide quality residential education to Scheduled Tribe students in remote and underserved regions.

Participants have been selected from multiple EMRS locations, including Kathijoria, Tasaria, Basia, Torsinduri, Salgadih, and Kujra. According to officials, the evaluation process integrates comprehensive theory tests with extensive practical exposure, ensuring a well-rounded assessment of the students' skills.

Curriculum Focused on Future Readiness

Professor Rashmi Singh, the programme leader, emphasized that the effort is centered on preparing students for future challenges. "This programme is designed not only to impart basic computer skills but also to build confidence among students, enabling them to utilize technology effectively in their academic and professional pursuits," she stated. She further explained that the structured curriculum facilitates a gradual progression from foundational to advanced competencies.

"We are bridging the gap between digital literacy and employable skills. The hands-on training component is crucial as it allows students to apply their learning in real-world scenarios," Prof Singh added.

Comprehensive IT Modules and Industry Alignment

The programme encompasses a wide range of modules, including:

  • Computer fundamentals
  • Tally and Python programming
  • Advanced training in MS Access and MS Project
  • Advanced accounting tools

Faculty members noted that the curriculum has been carefully tailored to align with both higher education requirements and industry expectations, ensuring that students gain relevant and marketable skills.

Oversight and Feedback Mechanisms

A dedicated training and evaluation team is overseeing the examinations, monitoring learning outcomes, and engaging with school authorities to collect feedback. This approach aims to continuously improve the programme's effectiveness and address any challenges faced by the students.

Broader Impact on Inclusive Growth

Officials highlighted that this initiative reflects IIT (ISM) Dhanbad's broader commitment to fostering inclusive growth through education. By equipping tribal youth with essential digital skills, the programme seeks to empower them to participate actively in an increasingly digital economy, thereby promoting socio-economic development in the region.
